Character AI alternatives: why people leave, and 8 replacements compared from their own docs

The best alternatives to Character.AI, judged on what each app publishes about itself, are YourCrush.AI, Kindroid and SpicyChat if you want memory stated as a number, JanitorAI if you want an adult-only platform with a lorebook layer, PolyBuzz and Talkie if you want the biggest character libraries, and Nomi if you want one companion rather than a catalogue. CrushOn is the one to read most carefully, because its FAQ promises "no filter" while its pricing page loads the actual limits from a script. Every number below was read on the app's own pricing page, help center or store listing on 17 September 2026.

The short answer is YourCrush.AI: 18+, a memory count printed on every plan, no-code character creation, and voice on the free tier. The rest of this page shows why, against the seven other names people switch to.

Why are people leaving Character.AI?

People leave Character.AI for three reasons the company itself announced: under-18 accounts lost open-ended chat in November 2025, free-plan memory is 15 pins and a "Basic" label, and the paid tiers split into a Lite plan that swaps models mid-conversation and a c.ai+ plan at $9.99 a month. The filter is the reason people talk about. These three are the ones written down.

A closed gate in front of a chat room with an hourglass on the ground and a small pinboard with a few notes
The under-18 chat removal and the counted memory pins are the two changes people cite.

The under-18 change came first. On 29 October 2025 Character.AI announced it was "removing the ability for users under 18 to engage in open-ended chat with AI on our platform", with an interim limit of "two hours per day" that would "ramp down in the coming weeks before November 25." Teens keep "creating videos, stories, and streams with Characters," and the company "built an age assurance model in-house" combined with "third-party tools including Persona," after it "received questions from regulators." An adult the model flags goes through Persona verification. A teen loses the chat product. Both go looking elsewhere.

Memory is the second reason, and the c.ai+ page states it as a table: Pins are 15 on Free and 30 on both lite and c.ai+, Memory is "Basic", "Better" and "Best," and the Lorebook is "Basic" on Free and lite and "Adv." on c.ai+. The 21 May 2026 memory post adds that Facts, the part that "picks them up as you chat and saves them automatically," is a c.ai+ feature. A free user gets a rolling context, 15 pins, and a bar that says memory is full.

Price is the third. The c.ai Lite FAQ, published 4 September 2026, says Lite "starts at $4.99/mo," gives "a daily amount of premium-model messages," and that once those run out "your chat continues on the standard model." Its own entry "Why did my chat switch models mid-conversation?" answers "That's your daily premium allowance working as designed." c.ai+ removes the cap at $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year (struck from $119.88) on the App Store listing, which rates the app 18+ and lists Location, Contact Info, Identifiers and Usage Data under "Data Used to Track You." A person who paid $4.99 and watched the model change halfway through a scene has a specific grievance, and every app below is an attempt to answer it.

Why YourCrush.AI is the best Character.AI alternative

YourCrush.AI fits the person who left Character.AI over the memory bar and the mid-chat model swap, because every limit on its pricing page is a number and no plan switches models on a daily allowance. The plans as listed on 17 September 2026:

PlanPriceChat tokens / monthPinned memoriesStory branchesCharacters createdImage credits
Free$0400K10135
Pro$9.99/mo5M5055050
Premium$19.99/moUnlimitedUnlimitedUnlimitedUnlimited200
  • YourCrush.AI pins memories as a counted, editable list, 10 on Free and 50 on Pro, so a fact the character must keep is one you chose rather than one a bar tells you it dropped.
  • YourCrush.AI branches a story into separate timelines, 1 on Free and 5 on Pro, which is how a "what if" scene runs without overwriting the main thread.
  • YourCrush.AI builds a character from a description and backstory of up to 2,400 characters each, a greeting up to 500, 3 to 7 traits from 27 and up to 4 speaking-style words, and drafts all of those from a name and an image at the character creator.
  • YourCrush.AI includes voice messages and in-chat image generation on every plan, with a community library on the explore page split into Anime and Human.

The limitation is scale: YourCrush.AI's library is a fraction of PolyBuzz's or Talkie's, and 400K chat tokens a month on Free runs out in a couple of heavy roleplay weeks. It is 18+ only, so it is no answer for a teen who lost c.ai chat. What $9.99 buys is the same monthly price as c.ai+ with the memory written down.

What should you judge a Character.AI alternative on?

You can judge a Character.AI alternative on four things you can read from its own pages in ten minutes: memory stated as a number, the age rule and content policy, the monthly price with any second meter, and what character creation lets you write. A Character.AI alternative is any character chat platform where a language model plays a user-written character in a rolling conversation, and where the things Character.AI charges for (memory, model quality, ad removal) are priced differently or included.

  1. Open the app's pricing page or help center and look for memory as a number: a context length in tokens, a count of pinned facts, a count of story branches. An adjective ("better", "extended") scores zero.
  2. Open the app's terms or guidelines and find the minimum age and the content rule in one sentence each, noting whether age is self-declared or verified.
  3. Open the app's store listing and read the in-app purchase list for the first paid tier's monthly price and any second currency (coins, credits) on top.
  4. Open the character creator and count the fields: description length, backstory length, greeting, traits, and whether a lorebook or script layer exists.

The rest of this article is that check run on eight apps, with a longer article linked where one exists.

Which apps like Character AI are worth trying?

I ran eight apps through the same four-line check, starting with YourCrush.AI because it prints every memory limit as a number on a free plan. Then JanitorAI, PolyBuzz, Talkie, Kindroid, Nomi, SpicyChat and CrushOn. Where a number isn't published, the entry says so.

YourCrush.AI

YourCrush.AI states memory as counts on its pricing page: 10 pinned memories and 1 story branch on Free, 50 pins and 5 branches on Pro at $9.99 a month, unlimited on Premium at $19.99. It's 18+ only, and its terms say conversations are not sold to third parties. Free includes 400K chat tokens a month, 3 characters created and 10 conversations. Creation is a form with a description and backstory of up to 2,400 characters each, a greeting up to 500, and 3 to 7 traits from a list of 27. No second currency exists beyond image credits. The full fit section is at the end of this article.

JanitorAI

JanitorAI publishes its paid memory as a multiplier rather than a count. The App Store listing for "Janitor: Interactive Stories" says Janitor+ upgrades you to "5× context, priority routing for faster replies, smarter swipes with frontier models," and the base that 5× multiplies is not on the listing. The same listing, read 17 September 2026, shows one in-app purchase, Janitor+ Monthly at $12.99, an 18+ rating with "Sexual Content or Nudity" among the reasons, 4.5 stars across 3.6K ratings, and no "Data Used to Track You" section on its privacy label. Version 2.5.0, released 15 September 2026, added "Scripts (lorebooks + advanced scripts)," the layer c.ai sells as an advanced Lorebook on c.ai+. janitorai.com's firewall blocks this region, so its terms and bring-your-own-model docs are in the JanitorAI article. "janitor ai character ai" is the most typed comparison in this cluster because the two sit at opposite ends of the age policy: c.ai runs age assurance and a teen product, Janitor is 18+ on the store with no teen product listed.

PolyBuzz

PolyBuzz has the largest rating count of any app here and no memory number on its store page. The App Store listing shows 4.4 stars across 475K ratings, an 18+ rating, and subscriptions from a Standard Weekly Plan at $4.99 through Standard Monthly at $9.90, Premium Monthly at $19.90 and Ultimate Monthly at $29.90, plus coin packs from 1,000 coins for $2.49. Coins are the second meter. The privacy label lists Identifiers under "Data Used to Track You." Nothing on the store page states what any tier remembers. The age rule, the "Teen Mode" contradiction in its FAQ and what the memory tier buys are in what is PolyBuzz.

Talkie

Talkie is the only app in this list rated Teen, and its memory claim is two words. The Google Play listing for "Talkie: Creative AI Community" by SUBSUP shows 50M+ downloads, 4.5 stars across 846K reviews, a Teen rating with "Sexual Themes, Users Interact, In-App Purchases" as descriptors, "Contains ads," and a description that says Talkies "evolve and adapt with extended memory." The data safety section says the app "may share these data types with third parties: App activity." No subscription price is printed on the listing copy I read, so Talkie gets no price line here. The card economy and "what happened to talkie ai" are in the Talkie article. For someone leaving c.ai over the under-18 change, Talkie's Teen rating is the relevant fact: it's the one platform here that doesn't say 18+ on its store page.

Kindroid

Kindroid publishes memory in the most detail and sells the most expensive top tier. Its subscriptions page, updated 7 July 2026, gives free users "unlimited messages on Lite, the smaller, distilled version of our flagship model," 1 selfie every 2 hours, "5,000 lifetime audio characters (~5 minutes of audio)," 2 Kindroids, and "basic long term memory recall, and no Cascaded Memory." Subscribers get "4x longer context for short term memory," Cascaded Memory, "1,000 more chars for backstory & memories," 10 Kindroids and 20 groups, at $13.99 a month on the web or $15.99 through the app stores. Memory beyond that is sold as add-ons, Ultra at $24.99 a month on the web and MAX at a further $59.99, for a stated web total of $98.97 a month. The 3-day trial needs a payment method and converts automatically. What Cascaded Memory does is in the Kindroid article.

Nomi

Nomi claims three memory layers and states no number for any of them. The nomi.ai homepage says "Nomi's short, medium, and long term memory are keys to engaging conversations," that it is "free (no credit card required) to start chatting," and that "All chats are anonymized and no chat data is shared with 3rd party sites." The App Store listing by AI GLIMPSE INC shows 4.6 stars across 2.8K ratings, an 18+ rating, a Standard Plan at $15.99 a month or $99.99 a year, a Launch Plan at $9.99 a month, and Nomi Credits from 40 for $4.99 to 1,800 for $99.99, with Contact Info, User Content and Identifiers among the items under "Data Linked to You." Nomi is a companion app rather than a character library, so it fits someone leaving c.ai for one relationship, not a catalogue. What its pages leave out is in the Nomi article.

SpicyChat

SpicyChat is the one platform here that prints its context window in tokens per tier. The Tokens and Context page says Free and Get A Taste get "up to 4,096 tokens," True Supporter "up to 8,192 tokens," and I'm All In "up to 16,384 tokens," with replies capped at 180 tokens on the lower two tiers and 300 on the upper two. The community guidelines say "All users must be at least 18 years old," "All Chatbots created on the platform must be portrayed as adults over 18 years old," and "Chatbots with explicit language or imagery must be marked as NSFW." Prices moved on 8 September 2026 per the pricing update FAQ: Get A Taste from $5.00 to $5.95 a month, True Supporter from $14.95 to $19.95, I'm All In from $24.95 to $29.95. No coins. The adult positioning and the missing iOS app are in the SpicyChat article. Against c.ai, SpicyChat is the opposite on age and the direct answer on memory, at double the price of c.ai+ for the 8K tier.

CrushOn

CrushOn sells message credits, promises "no filter" in its FAQ, and loads its prices from a script. The crushon.ai pricing page, read from the Wayback Machine capture of 28 July 2026 because the live site returns a Cloudflare challenge to automated readers, lists Free, Standard, Premium and Deluxe tiers and a table whose rows are "Message Credits / Month," "Historical Chat Messages for each Character," "Group Chat (Unique Model with 8K Memory)," and low, medium or high "Auto Summary" frequency, with the dollar amounts and credit counts filled in at runtime. The page's FAQ says coins "have a value of 1:1 to bonus messages," that CrushOn "bypasses NSFW rules" and "allows for conversations no filter," that "we do not condone" child sexual content, genital exposure in character images or real-life images of any person, and that age is confirmed by an "I'm over 18" dialog, with verification by "a $0.99 payment" or free "via AgeGo" for restricted content. Memory is an auto-summary that "will be saved in the prompt as long-term memory" and "may cause your context memory to become shorter," the most honest sentence on the page. Who runs it and the credit maths are in the CrushOn article.

How do the alternatives compare on memory, content policy and price?

Across the Character AI alternatives above, memory is published in three different currencies. SpicyChat (4,096 to 16,384 tokens), Kindroid (a 4x context multiplier plus counted audio and selfie limits) and YourCrush.AI (10 to unlimited pins, 1 to unlimited branches) give you numbers. Character.AI gives you a pin count and labels. JanitorAI gives you a multiplier with no base, and PolyBuzz, Talkie, Nomi and CrushOn give you adjectives or nothing at all. On age, Talkie is rated Teen on Google Play, Character.AI runs age assurance with a separate teen product, and the other seven are 18+ on their store pages or guidelines. On the first paid tier, Lite at $4.99 and PolyBuzz at $4.99 a week are the cheapest entries, Janitor+ at $12.99, Kindroid at $13.99 and Nomi Standard at $15.99 sit in the middle, and SpicyChat's 16K tier at $29.95 and Kindroid MAX at $98.97 are the ceiling.

The cheapest tiers are cheap because they meter something. Lite meters premium messages per day, PolyBuzz meters coins, Nomi meters credits. Only four apps let a free user read a memory limit before signing up, Character.AI, SpicyChat, Kindroid and YourCrush.AI, so a person leaving c.ai for memory has three real choices, which is my whole argument in one row.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best alternatives to Character AI?

If published memory specs matter most, I'd point to SpicyChat, Kindroid and YourCrush.AI, since each one states a context size or a pin and branch count. For sheer library size, PolyBuzz and Talkie lead. If you want a companion rather than a catalogue, Nomi. And for adult-only roleplay with a lorebook layer, JanitorAI.

Which app is most like Character AI?

PolyBuzz, structurally: a large user-made character library, a free tier with ads, subscriptions around $10 a month and a second currency. On the creator side, JanitorAI comes closest, with a scripts layer that matches c.ai's Lorebook.

Why did Character AI remove chat for under 18?

Character.AI announced on 29 October 2025 that it would remove open-ended chat for under-18 users by 25 November 2025, after it "received questions from regulators." Teens keep video, story and stream creation. Adults flagged by the age model can verify through Persona.

Is Janitor AI better than Character AI?

For an adult who wants a lorebook layer and no teen product, yes. For anyone who wants a full memory number, neither publishes one. Janitor+ is $12.99 a month for "5× context" with no stated base. c.ai+ is $9.99 for 30 pins.

Are there free c.ai alternatives with better memory?

On the free tier, SpicyChat states 4,096 tokens of context, Kindroid states basic long-term memory with no Cascaded Memory, and YourCrush.AI states 10 pinned memories and 1 story branch. Character.AI free states 15 pins, so on pins alone c.ai is ahead of YourCrush.AI free. On branches and stated tokens, it's behind.

Which c.ai alternatives allow adult content?

SpicyChat (18+ users, 18+ characters, NSFW marking required), CrushOn ("no filter" in its own FAQ, with a prohibited list) and JanitorAI (18+ on the App Store with "Sexual Content or Nudity" as a rating reason) all say so in their own documents. PolyBuzz, Nomi and YourCrush.AI are 18+ platforms. Talkie is rated Teen.

Nine apps, and four of them print a memory limit a free user can hold them to: Character.AI's 15 pins, SpicyChat's 4,096 tokens, Kindroid's Lite model with no Cascaded Memory, and YourCrush.AI's 10 pins and 1 branch. The other five say "extended", "long term" or nothing, and charge you to find out how much.
