AI character chat apps: four checks, then eight apps read from their own pages

Every platform in this category meters its free tier in a different unit. Character.AI counts memory pins, JanitorAI counts context tokens, PolyBuzz sells coins, Moescape sells Mochi, Joyland hands out daily credits, and Perchance counts nothing at all. That unit is the most useful fact on any of their pages, because it tells you what the company expects you to pay for once the free allowance runs out.

This guide to AI character chat apps is a method rather than a ranking. It defines the category against companion apps, gives you four checks you can run on any platform in about fifteen minutes, then reads eight apps from their own pricing pages, help centres and store listings, all opened on 17 and 18 September 2026. Where a platform publishes nothing on a point, I say so rather than guess.

The short answer is YourCrush.AI: a memory count on every plan, voice at $0, no-code character creation and an 18+ rule; the rest of this page shows why against the seven other names.

What is an AI character chat app, and how is it different from a companion app?

An AI character chat app hosts a library of characters, each with a written personality, a greeting and usually a scene, that anyone can talk to or roleplay with through a language model. Users can also create and publish characters of their own. The library is the defining feature: you switch between hundreds of characters made by other people, and the character, not the relationship, is the product.

A companion app works the other way. One character, built to persist, remember and relate to you over weeks, where the relationship is the product. Replika, Nomi and Kindroid are companion apps. Character.AI, JanitorAI and PolyBuzz are libraries, and some platforms sit in both. The companion side, with a ten-minute memory test that works on either kind, is in the best AI companion apps guide.

Why YourCrush.AI is the best AI character chat app to start with

YourCrush.AI meters its free tier in monthly chat tokens and prints every other limit as a number on its pricing page, as listed on 17 September 2026: Free at $0 with 400K chat tokens a month, 5 image credits, 3 active personas, 10 conversations, 3 created characters, voice messages, 1 story branch and 10 pinned memories. Pro at $9.99 a month raises that to 5M tokens, 50 image credits, 5 personas, 100 conversations, 50 characters, priority image generation, 5 story branches and 50 pinned memories; Premium at $19.99 a month removes the caps on tokens, personas, conversations, characters, branches and pinned memories, with 200 image credits.

YourCrush.AI stores pinned memories per character that you write and edit yourself, the check-3 pass that only Character.AI and Joyland also publish as a count. YourCrush.AI builds characters without code from a name, an image, a description and backstory of up to 2,400 characters each, a greeting of up to 500, 3 to 7 traits from a list of 32, up to 4 speaking-style words and a behavior mode, and it can generate the description, backstory, greeting and traits from the name and image alone. YourCrush.AI branches a story into separate outcomes from a chosen point, sends voice messages on every plan including Free, generates images inside the chat, and keeps a community library at /explore split into Anime and Human categories. YourCrush.AI is 18+ only and states that conversations are not sold to third parties.

The limitation is the free tier's conversation cap: ten conversations and three created characters is a small library for anyone who wants to run the four checks across dozens of characters, and 400K chat tokens a month is one long daily roleplay, not an unlimited one. The creator is at /create-character.

Why did searches for this category rise 805% in a year?

Searches for "ai character chat apps" grew 805% year on year to 27,100 a month, per our own DataForSEO pull for this site on 17 September 2026. Two events fit the timing, and both are about who gets let in. Character.AI announced on 29 October 2025 that it would remove open-ended chat for users under 18 no later than 25 November 2025, with a two-hour daily limit during the transition and age assurance run by an in-house model combined with a third-party tool, Persona. For a large share of its users, the default answer to "chat with ai characters" stopped being the answer. So they typed the category name instead of the brand.

The other event was regulatory. On 11 September 2025 the FTC issued 6(b) orders to seven companies, including Character Technologies, Meta, OpenAI and Snap, asking how they monetize engagement, test for negative impacts, and use or share personal information from chatbot conversations. Demand was already there. A Common Sense Media survey of US teens aged 13 to 17, published 16 July 2025, found 72% had used AI companions at least once and over half used them at least a few times a month. The related queries in the same pull carry the same shape: "ai character chat free" at 14,800 searches a month and "ai character chat free no sign up" at 2,400.

What are the four checks to run before you pick one?

Four checks, all of them doable from the platform's own pages without creating an account: the age rule and data label, the unit the free tier is metered in, where memory sits and whether you can edit it, and who made the character and where your words go.

Four tiles: a push pin, a padlock, a coin, a pen
Memory, content rules, price, creation: the four checks.
  1. Read the age rule and the store data label together. Note the age rating on the App Store or Google Play listing, then find the minimum-age sentence in the terms. The store label also says whether identifiers may be used to track you across other companies' apps and whether app activity may be shared with third parties.
  2. Find the unit the free tier is metered in. The cap is written in one of six units: messages, context tokens, memory pins, coins or credits per reply, image credits, or a monthly chat-token allowance. A coin-per-reply meter charges you for talking. A token allowance charges you for volume. A pin count charges you for being remembered.
  3. Locate memory and check whether you can edit it. Memory on these platforms is the model's context window (recent messages, which scroll out), a pinned or custom memory you write yourself, or a summarised long-term store the platform manages. Find which one the free tier has, whether the count is a number on the pricing page, and whether you can open the memory and change it by hand.
  4. Check who made the character and where the conversation goes. A library character was written by another user, so open its definition if the platform allows it. Then check whether the platform runs its own model or routes your chat to an outside provider you configure yourself, because the second case moves your words to a company whose privacy policy you have not read.

An app that fails check 2 is still usable, since you know what you will pay for. An app that fails check 1 has rules you cannot state, and no library size fixes that.

What does each app publish against the four checks?

Six of the seven platforms below require an account, five publish a price, and three print a memory figure as a number. Each entry cites the platform's own page, and the linked sibling article reads that platform in full.

Character.AI

Character.AI has the largest library and publishes its memory tiers as numbers. Its plan comparison page, opened 18 September 2026, lists the free tier with full ads, 15 memory pins, basic memory usage, a basic Lorebook and a slow mode; c.ai Lite with fewer ads and 30 pins; and c.ai+ with no ads, 30 pins, detailed memory usage, an advanced Lorebook and priority access at $94.99 a year on the annual plan. The unit is pins, and the free count is 15.

The age rule is the November 2025 change described above, and the platforms adults moved to after it are compared in Character.AI alternatives.

JanitorAI

JanitorAI lets you swap the model, and its free tier is metered in context tokens. The subscription FAQ in its help centre, updated 25 June 2026, lists the free tier as unlimited chats, access to standard chat models and a context limit of around 9K tokens. Its newsroom post of 24 June 2026 introduced janitor+ at $12.99 a month with five times the context, unlimited priority messages and monthly swipes with frontier models, and states that the free version stays completely free.

The age rule is the strictest wording here: its content policy, updated 21 August 2026, says the service is exclusively for an audience above 18 and that users reasonably suspected of being under 18 are permanently banned. Check 4 is where JanitorAI stands apart, because a proxy sends your chat to an outside model provider you configure, explained in what Janitor AI is and how a proxy works.

PolyBuzz

PolyBuzz is a mobile-first library metered in coins and subscriptions, and it publishes nothing about memory. Its App Store listing, developer Cloud Whale Interactive Technology LLC, opened 18 September 2026, is rated 18+, holds a 4.4 average across 475,000 ratings, and lists in-app purchases from 1,000 coins at $2.49 to 20,000 coins at $19.90, plus Poly Standard at $9.90 a month, Poly Premium at $19.90 and Poly Ultimate at $29.90. The privacy label says identifiers may be used to track you across apps and websites owned by other companies.

That is a fail on check 3 by absence: no pin count, no context figure, no memory tier. What the coins buy and how the terms read is in what PolyBuzz is and whether it is safe.

Talkie

Talkie leads on downloads and is the one platform here rated Teen on Google Play. Its Play listing, developer SUBSUP, opened 18 September 2026, shows more than 50 million downloads, a 4.5 average across 846,000 reviews, ads and in-app purchases, and a data-safety section stating that app activity may be shared with third parties. The listing claims characters "evolve and adapt with extended memory" and gives no number for it.

A Teen rating is the check-1 case to look at closely, and the full read, including the December 2024 App Store removal, is in Talkie AI: what the listings and policies say.

Moescape

Moescape is anime-only and meters everything in a currency called Mochi. Its Mochi and subscription page, opened 18 September 2026, gives new users 100 Mochi plus 50 Mochi a day to claim, and sells four tiers: Plus at $9.99 a month with 1,400 Mochi, Pro at $14.99 with 1,250 Mochi and unlimited chats on select models, Premium at $29.99 with 2,500 Mochi, and Platinum at $39.99 with 6,250 Mochi, with reply length raised from 700 to 1,000 output tokens as the tiers rise. Every paid tier lists "better memory in chats" without a figure.

The pricing page states no age rule, so check 1 needs the terms, which are read in Moescape AI: what is free, how memory works, where it stops.

Joyland

Joyland meters the free tier in daily credits and sells memory depth by plan. Its membership page lists a free plan with 10 credits a day, limited model trials and 3 personas; Standard at $19.99 a month ($9.99 early-bird, $107.99 a year) with 5,000 monthly credits, unlimited text conversations, short-term memory that persists across sessions and 20 personas; and Premium at $39.99 a month ($19.99 early-bird, $191.99 a year) with unlimited credits, long-term memory and 50 personas. Free users get basic context within the current conversation only, in the page's own words.

Check 3 passes on editability: the memory function page describes a Customized Memory tool where you type what the character should keep. The Google Play listing, developer MINDZEN AI, is rated Mature 17+, shows more than 100,000 downloads and a 2.4 average across 1,310 reviews, and declares no data shared and no data collected. Why searches for the brand fell over the year is in Joyland AI: library, memory and the credit meter.

Perchance AI character chat

Perchance is the one platform here with no account, no price and no meter. Its AI character chat page, opened 18 September 2026, is titled "online, free, no sign-up, unlimited" and its own description states no login, unlimited messages, unlimited AI-generated images, custom character creation and no message limits. It is the direct answer to "ai character chat free no sign up".

The trade is check 3: nothing on the chat page describes a pin count or a long-term store. How characters and threads are kept, and what its terms say, is in Perchance AI character chat: how it works and where it stops.

Which of these is free, and what does each one meter?

All seven have a free way in, and the unit behind it decides what runs out first. A 9K-token context on JanitorAI is a memory limit dressed as a chat limit: a long roleplay scrolls its opening out of view by mid-session. A coin meter on PolyBuzz, a credit meter on Joyland or a Mochi meter on Moescape is a volume limit, and it charges the heaviest users first. A pin count on Character.AI is a recall limit, the one you notice in week two. Perchance's no-account free tier has no meter and, by the same token, no memory tied to you. The cheapest paid tier among the five with prices is c.ai+ at $94.99 a year, or $7.92 a month; the most expensive is Moescape's Platinum at $39.99 a month.

Four small meters side by side: a dripping tap, a calendar, a coin jar, a token counter
Every free tier meters something: messages, days, coins or tokens.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a character chat app and an AI companion app?

A character chat app is a library of user-made characters you switch between. A companion app is one character built to persist and relate to you over time. Character.AI, JanitorAI, PolyBuzz, Talkie, Moescape, Joyland and Perchance are libraries. Replika, Nomi and Kindroid are companions.

Is there a free AI character chat with no sign up?

Yes. Perchance's AI character chat runs with no login and states unlimited messages on its own page. Every other platform in this article requires an account for its free tier.

Which of these apps remember past conversations?

Three of them publish a figure. Character.AI gives you 15 pins free and 30 on paid tiers. Joyland keeps short-term memory across sessions on Standard and long-term memory on Premium, editable by hand. JanitorAI runs a 9K-token free context, five times that on janitor+. PolyBuzz, Talkie and Moescape claim memory without a number.

Which character chat apps are 18+?

JanitorAI states its service is exclusively for users above 18 and bans suspected minors permanently. PolyBuzz is rated 18+ on the App Store. Character.AI removed open-ended chat for under-18s in November 2025. Talkie is rated Teen on Google Play and Joyland Mature 17+, so neither store rating matches an adults-only rule.

What are AI character chat platforms like to use?

You pick a character from a library, read its greeting and reply in prose or roleplay, and the character answers in its written voice until the memory limit or the meter runs out. The unit of that meter, pins, tokens, coins, credits or Mochi, is the main difference between platforms.

Six of these eight platforms publish a price and four publish a memory number, and none of the four is the one with the most downloads. The next time a list ranks this category by installs, check whether the top entry can tell you, in a number, how much it will remember.
