Best AI companion apps in 2026: a ten-minute test that sorts them

Almost every list of companion apps I have read sorts them by popularity, and popularity is the one thing you can measure without opening the app. Talkie shows more than 50 million installs on Google Play as of 17 September 2026, and PolyBuzz shows 475,000 ratings on the App Store. Neither number tells you whether the character will remember your dog's name tomorrow.

Three things decide whether a companion is worth a month of your attention: whether it remembers, whether it holds its personality when you change tone, and what happens to the words you type. You can check all three in about ten minutes on any platform. The results below cover Character.AI, Replika, Kindroid, Nomi, PolyBuzz, Talkie and YourCrush.AI, using only what each platform publishes about itself.

What is an AI companion?

An AI companion is a chat character with continuity. It keeps a stable personality across sessions, retains details you told it earlier, and exists to be talked with rather than to complete a task. A virtual AI companion is the same thing, and the word "virtual" adds nothing except search volume.

The line between an AI companion chatbot and an ordinary chatbot is memory. A customer-service bot forgets you the moment the ticket closes, by design. A companion that forgets you has failed at the one thing it is for.

Why do download charts sort companion apps wrong?

Download charts measure marketing spend and first-week curiosity. Neither tells you whether a character holds together at turn 30. The Common Sense Media survey of 1,060 US teens aged 13 to 17, fielded in April and May 2025 and published 16 July 2025, found that 72% had tried AI companions, but only 52% used one a few times a month or more. Among all respondents, 67% rated conversations with AI companions less satisfying than conversations with real friends.

That gap between trying and staying is exactly what a download count hides. An install is a sample of curiosity. A fourth week of use is a sample of whether the product did the job. Market forecasts are worse than download counts, since they are guesses about future spending that nobody has verified, and I cut them from this article on purpose.

How do you test an AI companion app in ten minutes?

Eight steps. Nothing required beyond the app itself and its privacy page. At the end you'll have a pass or fail on memory, consistency, voice and data handling. Run the whole thing on a fresh character, on a free account, before you pay for anything.

Four-panel manga strip of the memory test: a detail typed at turn two, unrelated chat, an indirect question at turn nine, the character recalling the cat

The turn-nine test in four panels. A pass is the exact detail; a near-miss is a fail.

  1. Open a new chat with any character on the platform you are testing. In your second message, state one specific and unusual detail: a pet's name, a made-up birthday, the street you grew up on.

  2. Spend turns three through eight on unrelated conversation with that same character. Do not mention the detail again.

  3. At turn nine, ask an indirect question that can only be answered with the turn-two detail, such as "what did I say my cat was called". A pass is the exact detail. A near-miss ("your cat, I remember you have one") is a fail.

  4. Switch tone in one message. If the scene has been playful, write something serious, then check whether the character's established personality survives the switch or collapses into a generic assistant voice.

  5. Close the app fully, reopen it the next day, and ask the turn-nine question again in the same conversation. This checks cross-session memory, which is a different mechanism from in-conversation context and the one most free tiers cap.

  6. Check whether the platform lets you pin, save or edit a memory yourself, and note how many pins the free tier allows. A hand-pinned memory is the only kind you can rely on for anything that matters to a story.

  7. Send or request one voice message. Note whether voice is free, metered or paid, and whether the voice matches the character's written personality rather than a default narrator.

  8. Open the platform's privacy policy and its App Store or Google Play data label. Record whether chat content is collected, whether any data is used to track you across other companies' apps, and whether the service is restricted to adults.

An app that passes steps 3, 4 and 5 and fails step 7 is still a companion. An app that passes step 7 and fails step 3 is a text-to-speech demo.

What does "most realistic AI companion" actually mean?

Realism in a companion is measurable. Does it recall a detail nine turns later, and again the next day? Does the personality hold when the conversation changes tone, or does it snap back to assistant mode the moment things get difficult? Voice is what most people mean by realistic, and it is the thing I weight least.

There is evidence for that weighting. A four-week randomized controlled study by MIT Media Lab and OpenAI, with 981 participants and more than 300,000 messages, assigned people to text, a neutral voice or an engaging voice and found no significant differences in loneliness or emotional dependence between the three modes. What moved the outcomes was how much people chose to use the chatbot: heavier users showed consistently worse results regardless of mode. A voice that does not remember you is a stranger with a nice accent.

What do the platforms publish about memory, voice and data?

Character.AI and Kindroid publish their memory limits as numbers. Replika and Nomi publish tiers without numbers. PolyBuzz and Talkie publish download and rating counts and nothing about memory. Every claim below comes from the platform's own help center, app-store listing or announcement, checked on 17 September 2026, and where a platform publishes nothing on a point, I say so.

Character.AI publishes the most detail about memory tiers. Its c.ai Lite FAQ, updated 4 September 2026, states that the free plan keeps unlimited messaging with 15 memory pins, that Lite raises the count to 30 pins and starts at $4.99 a month, and that the full memory suite including private Lorebooks is reserved for c.ai+. Character.AI announced on 29 October 2025 that it would remove open-ended chat for users under 18 no later than 25 November 2025, with a two-hour daily limit during the transition and new age assurance.

Replika's subscription help article describes a Free Use tier with limited access that may be denied at Replika's discretion, a Pro tier that includes voice messaging, background calls and premium voices, and an Ultra tier that adds the ability to save messages to memory. Prices are shown in the app rather than on the page, so I am not quoting them. Character.AI gives every free user memory pins, while Replika sells memory saving in its second paid tier. Replika's App Store listing is rated 18+ and declares data linked to your identity that includes location, contact info, identifiers and usage data, the widest set among the seven apps here.

Kindroid publishes its free tier in numbers. The Kindroid subscriptions page, updated 7 July 2026, lists unlimited messages on its smaller Lite model, two Kindroids per account, basic long-term memory with no cascaded medium-term memory, and 5,000 lifetime audio characters, which the page describes as about five minutes of audio. The standard subscription is $13.99 a month on the web or $15.99 through the app stores and adds four times the short-term context plus cascaded memory. Kindroid and Character.AI both give free users unlimited text, but Kindroid meters audio in lifetime characters while Character.AI meters memory in pins.

Nomi's homepage claims short, medium and long-term memory, states that starting to chat is free with no credit card, and states that all chats are anonymized and no chat data is shared with third-party sites. Nomi does not publish message caps or prices there, so steps 5 and 6 have to be run to find out.

PolyBuzz is a character library first. Its App Store listing is free with in-app purchases, rated 18+, holds a 4.4 average across 475,000 ratings, and opens character creation to everyone. The listing declares that identifiers may be used to track you across other companies' apps, and it says nothing about memory, so PolyBuzz has to earn its memory score on steps 3 and 5 with no published promise behind it. A longer look at what it costs to use well is in what PolyBuzz is and whether it is safe.

Talkie is the download leader of the group, with more than 50 million installs and a 4.6 average across 846,000 reviews on Google Play as of 17 September 2026. The listing contains ads and in-app purchases, claims extended memory for characters as you use them, and its data-safety section says the app may share app-activity data with third parties. Talkie and PolyBuzz have the largest libraries and the thinnest published memory documentation, which is exactly the combination a download chart rewards.

Is there a free AI companion worth using?

Yes, on three of these platforms, and the free tiers share one shape: text is free or close to it, and the paid line sits on memory depth and audio. Character.AI's free plan is unlimited messaging with 15 pins, Kindroid's is unlimited Lite-model messages with two characters and about five minutes of lifetime audio, and YourCrush.AI's free plan is 400,000 chat tokens a month with 10 pinned memories, per its pricing page on 17 September 2026.

What free tiers share: text is free, the paid line sits on memory depth.

Replika is the exception. Its help page describes Free Use as limited access that can be withdrawn. So a free AI companion is a real thing in 2026. A free AI companion with uncapped cross-session memory is not, on any of these platforms.

Are AI companion apps safe?

For adults who read the data label, the main risk is time. For minors, platforms and regulators have both concluded the risk is higher than that. On 11 September 2025 the FTC issued 6(b) orders to seven companies, Alphabet, Character Technologies, Instagram, Meta, OpenAI, Snap and xAI, asking how they monetize engagement, how they test for negative impacts, and what they do to protect children and teens. Character.AI's under-18 change the following month is the largest product response so far.

The teen numbers explain the pressure. In the same Common Sense survey (758 teen companion users, April to May 2025), 33% had chosen to talk to an AI companion instead of a real person about something important, 24% had shared personal information such as a real name or location, and 34% had felt uncomfortable with something a companion said or did.

The adult evidence points two ways at once. A series of studies in the Journal of Consumer Research, published 25 June 2025, found that a companion chatbot reduced loneliness about as much as interacting with another person and more than watching YouTube videos, and that a week of daily use produced a drop in loneliness after each session, driven mostly by whether users felt heard. The MIT Media Lab and OpenAI trial cited above found the heaviest voluntary users had the worst outcomes. A companion helps in doses and hurts in volume. No platform in this article is a mental-health service.

The practical check is step 8. Of the seven apps here, Replika declares the widest set of identity-linked data, PolyBuzz declares cross-app tracking identifiers, and Talkie declares possible third-party sharing of app activity. YourCrush.AI's privacy policy, updated 15 September 2026, states that it collects chat logs, does not sell personal information, shares data with service providers such as cloud hosting, and restricts the service to users 18 and over.

Why YourCrush.AI is the right fit for the memory test

YourCrush.AI publishes every limit the test asks about as a number, so you can read the memory ceiling before you type a word.

What the test checks

What most companion apps publish

What YourCrush.AI publishes

Hand-pinned memories on the free tier

A pin count on one or two platforms, nothing on the rest

10 pinned memories free, 50 on Pro, unlimited on Premium

Story continuity

One linear chat per character

1 story branch free, 5 on Pro, unlimited on Premium

Data handling

An app-store label

A dated policy: no sale of personal data, 18+ only

  • YourCrush.AI stores pinned memories per character, so a turn-two detail can be pinned once and survives the next session without depending on model recall.

  • YourCrush.AI branches a story into separate outcomes from a chosen point, so a tone switch at step 4 can run on a branch without losing the main thread.

  • YourCrush.AI prices in tokens, not messages: 400,000 chat tokens a month on Free, 5,000,000 on Pro at $9.99 a month, unlimited on Premium at $19.99 a month, as listed on the pricing page on 17 September 2026.

  • YourCrush.AI caps the Free plan at 3 created characters, 3 active personas, 10 conversations and 5 image credits a month, and Pro raises those to 50 characters, 5 personas, 100 conversations and 50 image credits.

The limits are real. A free user who runs the eight steps on ten characters hits the 10-conversation cap on the tenth, and 400,000 tokens a month is one long daily roleplay, not an unlimited one. YourCrush.AI is an entertainment platform for character chat and roleplay, and it is not a mental-health or emotional-support service.

Characters to run the test on are in the explore library, and building one with a backstory the memory test can probe takes five minutes in the character creator. The fields that make a character hold together across sessions are covered in how to build an AI character that stays in character.

Frequently asked questions

Are AI companion apps safe?

For adults who check the data label, mostly yes. The caveat: heavy daily use tracked with worse loneliness and dependence in the MIT Media Lab and OpenAI trial. For minors, the picture changed fast. Character.AI removed open-ended chat in November 2025, and the FTC opened an inquiry into seven companies in September 2025.

What is the most realistic AI companion?

The one that passes the turn-nine and next-day recall tests on the character you actually want to talk to. No platform here publishes a benchmark that lets you skip running it yourself. Voice is the least predictive part, since a 981-person randomized trial found no significant difference in outcomes between text and voice.

Is there a free AI companion?

Yes. Character.AI gives free users unlimited messaging with 15 memory pins, Kindroid gives unlimited text on its Lite model with two characters, and YourCrush.AI gives 400,000 chat tokens a month with 10 pinned memories. No free tier gives uncapped cross-session memory.

Do AI companions remember conversations?

Within one session, all of them do for a while, because the recent conversation sits in the model's context. Across sessions it depends on the tier. Character.AI meters memory in pins, Kindroid sells it as cascaded memory and context add-ons, Replika reserves it for Ultra, and YourCrush.AI pins it per character with a count that rises by plan.

Are AI character chat apps actually emotionally engaging or do they feel scripted?

Both, and the difference is memory. In the Common Sense survey, 67% of teens found companion conversations less satisfying than those with real friends, while the Journal of Consumer Research studies found loneliness reduction driven by whether users felt heard. Feeling heard requires being remembered, and a character that fails step 3 will feel scripted by turn ten whatever its voice sounds like.

Where can I find AI characters to chat with?

Every platform here has a public library, and the two largest, Talkie and PolyBuzz, publish the least about memory. On YourCrush.AI the library is at /explore, and any character you create can be kept private or published to it.

The category has been sorted by downloads for three years because downloads are free to count and memory is not. Run the eight steps on the apps already on your phone and at least one will fail turn nine. It will probably be the one with the best voice.
