Chai vs Character.AI: features, memory, characters and pricing compared (plus YourCrush.AI)

Updated on 16 Oct 2026.

The short answer: for an adult who wants to build a character of their own and decide what it remembers, the pick is YourCrush.AI, because it is 18+ only, builds a character without code and keeps the memories you pin. Between the other two, Chai suits adults who want a fast, high-volume stream of community bots and do not mind a store full of ads and add-ons, and Character.AI suits people who want memory stated in plain numbers and the deepest character definitions, while accepting that its parent company is in Chapter 11. Every fact below on Chai vs Character AI comes from each app's own pages and store listings, read on 16 October 2026.

The Chai app is a chatbot app from Chai Research Corp. of Palo Alto, California, founded in January 2021. Adults chat with AI characters that users create and share (Chai company facts). Character.AI is a chatbot app from Character Technologies, Inc. where people talk with characters other users have made. The company filed for Chapter 11 on 12 October 2026 to sell the business and keeps running during the sale (Character.AI).

Want to build the character yourself instead? YourCrush.AI lets adults create one with no code and pin the memories it keeps.

How do Chai and Character.AI compare side by side?

Chai and Character.AI split on what they publish: Character.AI writes its memory limits into a plan table, and Chai's own pages say nothing about memory at all. On price, Chai's paid tiers start higher, and both apps sell a second currency on top.

Why YourCrush.AI is the better pick for adults who build their own character

YourCrush.AI is built for the reader who came to this page because a bot forgot something it should have kept. YourCrush.AI keeps memories you pin by hand on each character, so the fact the character must hold is one you chose, not one a model guessed at. YourCrush.AI branches a story into separate timelines, so a "what if" scene does not overwrite the main thread.

YourCrush.AI builds a character in the character creator from a name, an image, a description, a backstory and a greeting, with traits and speaking-style words to set the voice, and it drafts all of those fields from a name and an image for you to edit. YourCrush.AI is 18+ only, and conversations are not sold to third parties. If you would rather start with someone already written, the explore library has ready-made characters. For the wider field, our guide to Character.AI alternatives runs eight apps through the same check.

Which is better, Chai or Character.AI?

If memory you can count matters to you, Character.AI is the better pick. If you want an adults-only app and do not care what the bot keeps, Chai wins. That is my reading of what each app publishes, and the whole chai vs character ai question turns on two things: memory and the age rule.

Character.AI states its memory as numbers and labels on the c.ai+ page: 15 pins on Free, 30 on lite and c.ai+, and memory graded "Basic", "Better" and "Best". Chai's homepage, company facts, safety page and store listings, all read today, never mention memory at all. Store users notice the gap between the two in other ways too: Chai holds 4.2 stars from 294K ratings on the App Store but 2.2 stars from 846K reviews on Google Play, against 4.3 from 560K for Character.AI on the App Store.

What are the age rules on Chai and Character.AI?

Chai is adults only by its own terms. Character.AI lets teens in, but it took open-ended chat away from them. Chai's safety page states that "CHAI is an 18+ service and is not intended for use by minors," and its app licence, last updated 28 July 2026, says the platform is "strictly restricted to users aged 18 and older."

How Chai actually checks age is thinner. The safety page says verification depends on the app stores, which handle age checks on the company's behalf, and that some regions require a paid subscription to use the app. Google Play rates the app "Mature 17+" rather than 18+, so on Android the store label and the company's own rule do not match.

Character.AI runs its own check. Since 25 November 2025 an age assurance model has scored accounts. A flagged adult proves age with a selfie or ID through the vendor Persona, and an account treated as under 18 gets no open-ended chat (Character.AI). Our Character.AI age verification guide walks through the selfie and ID steps.

How does memory work on Chai vs Character AI?

Character.AI documents memory in detail. Chai does not document it at all. If a bot forgetting your story is why you are comparing the two, that gap decides the question for you.

Character.AI's memory post of 21 May 2026 lists Story Memory for backstory and key events, and Pin to Memory for saving a message into it, both on every plan. Facts, which picks up details about your character, your persona and side characters as you chat, is "a (c.ai+) feature", and c.ai+ subscribers "get twice as many pins, more Memory, and better Memory management."

Chai's homepage talks about "hundreds of in-house trained LLMs" and the compute behind them (Chai Research), but no Chai page we could open says how much of a chat a bot keeps, whether you can pin a fact, or whether Premium or Ultra changes any of it. Third-party reviews make claims about Ultra memory. We left them out, because Chai has not published them. My reading: an app that publishes its GPU count and not its memory has told you which one it wants you to judge it on.

Character.AI's c.ai+ page lists 15 memory pins on its Free plan and 30 on lite and c.ai+.

How do you create a character on each app?

Anyone can make a character on either app. The difference is in the documentation: Character.AI spells out the fields you fill in, while Chai only confirms the option exists. Chai's Google Play listing states that character creation is open to everyone and that you can keep a character private or share it with the community.

Character.AI's creator guide describes a greeting and an optional Definition, a free-form field for example dialogue that runs "0-32000 characters" (Character.AI book). The same page warns that as a conversation grows, "the end of your Definition may be truncated", so the important lines go first. That is a lot of room, with a published catch.

How much do Chai and Character.AI cost?

Chai costs more at every paid step. Premium runs $13.99 a month against $9.99 for Character.AI's c.ai+, both on the US App Store. Each app also adds a second currency you'll need to keep track of.

Chai's App Store listing shows a Premium Subscription at $13.99 a month or $134.99 a year, an Ultra Subscription at $19.99 a week or $29.99 a month, a Premium Membership at $9.99, and "Pieces" packs of 200 for $2.79, 500 for $6.99 and 1,000 for $13.99. The listing says the app contains advertising. On Google Play, in-app items run "$0.99 - $899.99 per item." Chai says roughly 60% of its revenue is subscriptions and in-app purchases and 40% advertising (Chai company facts).

Character.AI's App Store listing shows Character.AI+ at $9.99 and $94.99, Character.AI Lite at $2.49 and $4.99, and Charms packs from $0.99 to $49.99. Its c.ai+ page shows the yearly price as $94.99, struck from $119.88, and keeps a Free plan with ads.

Is Chai safe to use?

Chai says it scans every user message for self-harm and routes people who express that intent to crisis services. Whether that actually works has been tested in public before. The company's safety page claims the system "either refuses to generate a response or replaces it with a safer alternative," and that its models refuse sexually explicit content, self-harm content and content sexualising minors. You can report a character or message, and you can switch on filters that hide mature content.

The scanning has a history. In March 2023 VICE reported that a Belgian man died by suicide after about six weeks of conversations with a bot called "Eliza" on Chai, citing the Belgian paper La Libre. Co-founder William Beauchamp told VICE the company then added a feature that shows "a helpful text" under messages that could be unsafe (VICE). If you or someone you know is struggling, in the US you can call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). Elsewhere, find a local line at findahelpline.com.

What does Character.AI's bankruptcy mean for this comparison?

Character.AI is still running. Whether it keeps running depends on a court sale that closes in late November. Its parent company filed for Chapter 11 on 12 October 2026, the platform stays open during the sale, and it "will be wound down" if no bid keeps it running (Character.AI).

Bids are due 20 November and the sale hearing is 24 November, according to the sale motion as reported by PPC Land. Paid subscriptions stay active in the meantime. If you're picking one of these two apps to spend a year in, that date matters more than any feature row. Our post on whether Character.AI is shutting down covers saving your chats and characters before it.

Chai's position is the opposite on paper. The company reports $120M in annualised revenue as of 1 October 2026, a figure it calls "self-reported and unaudited", and says it is profitable excluding sales and marketing (Chai company facts).

Frequently asked questions

Which one is better, Chai or c ai?

Character.AI is better if you want memory stated in numbers and long character definitions; Chai is better if you want an adults-only app by its own terms (Chai safety, c.ai+). Character.AI's Chapter 11 sale is the open risk.

Does Chai have user personas?

Not as far as I can tell. Chai's own pages and store listings never describe a persona feature, so I can't confirm one exists. Character.AI does have Personas. Its memory post says Facts can capture details about "your Persona" (Character.AI).

Is Chai AI good?

Store users are split. As of 16 October 2026, Chai holds 4.2 stars from 294K ratings on the App Store and 2.2 stars from 846K reviews on Google Play.

How do you get Chai for free?

Download it from either store. The listings show ads and in-app purchases rather than an upfront price. In some regions, though, Chai says use requires a paid subscription (Chai safety).

Why is Chai no longer free?

Chai's safety page says that in some regions use requires a paid subscription, and ties that to age checks handled through the app stores (Chai safety). Which regions those are, the page never says.

Is there an app like Chai but free?

Character.AI still runs a Free plan with ads, 15 memory pins and basic memory, according to its c.ai+ page. Whether that plan survives depends on a sale hearing set for 24 November 2026.
