Searches for this question rose 5,233% year on year in our own keyword pull of 17 September 2026 (3,600 searches a month, measured with DataForSEO for this site). It's the fastest-rising query we track, and one policy change explains it. Since 25 November 2025, Character.AI decides how old you are from account signals, and anyone it decides is under 18 loses chat. A flagged adult gets chat back with a selfie, and in some cases an ID, both handled by a vendor called Persona. Everything below comes from Character.AI's own announcement and help center (newest article edited 11 September 2026), Persona's own documentation and the UK regulator's list of age-check methods, read on 18 September 2026.
Character AI age verification is the two-stage process Character.AI uses to sort accounts into an 18+ experience and an under-18 experience. An automated age assurance model scores every account from login information, platform activity and third-party signals. An account scored as under 18 can prove otherwise through a selfie age estimate, then a government ID, both processed by the identity vendor Persona rather than by Character.AI.
YourCrush.AI is 18+ from the first screen, with no selfie or ID step and a memory count on every plan, which is where this article ends for adults who want out of the verification loop.
When did Character AI start verifying age, and why?
Character.AI announced the system on 29 October 2025, to be in place no later than 25 November 2025, alongside the removal of open-ended chat for users under 18. The post says the company "built an age assurance model in-house" and would combine it with "third-party tools including Persona," and gives its reason as "questions from regulators" about "how open-ended AI chat in general might affect teens, even when content controls work perfectly."
Before that date, age on Character.AI was a birthday you typed at signup. The help center's birthday article, published October 2024 and still live, says the date is collected "because we require users to be over a minimum age to engage with Characters." That's self-declaration, nothing more. The October 2025 change kept the birthday field and stopped trusting it. What teens lost, and the interim two-hour daily cap, are covered in beta Character AI: what old c.ai was and what replaced it; this article is about the check itself.
Why YourCrush.AI is the better choice for adults who are done with the check
YourCrush.AI admits adults only: its terms of service, last updated 15 September 2026, say "the Services are intended for users who are at least 18 years old" and that "persons under the age of 18 are not permitted to use or register," and its privacy policy of the same date says the date of birth collected at signup is used "to verify age eligibility" and that "we do not sell your personal information." YourCrush.AI has no under-18 experience to fall into, so the reading-mode problem this article describes, an adult account stripped of chat until a selfie clears it, does not exist on the platform. YourCrush.AI meters its Free plan at 400K chat tokens a month with 10 conversations, 3 characters and 10 pinned memories, its Pro plan at $9.99 a month with 5M tokens, 100 conversations, 50 characters and 50 pins, and its Premium plan at $19.99 a month with unlimited tokens, conversations, characters and pins, as listed on its pricing page. YourCrush.AI builds a character in the no-code creator from a name, an image, a backstory of up to 2,400 characters and three to seven traits from a list of 32.
The limitation, stated plainly: YourCrush.AI's age rule is a declared date of birth, not a selfie or an ID, and by Ofcom's list, quoted later in this article, self-declaration is not a highly effective method. It is the gate Common Sense Media found teens walk through elsewhere. YourCrush.AI is for the adult who has weighed the Persona flow and would rather sign a statement than upload a face; it is not a platform that can prove to a regulator it has kept minors out.
What triggers an age check on Character AI?
An automated score triggers it. Not the birthday you entered, and not a report from another user. The age assurance explainer, published 31 October 2025, says the company runs "age assurance tech on all accounts" that looks at "a number of signals, including login info, activity on the platform, and some signals from third parties." It answers the question "Is it based on the birthday we set?" with a flat "No." Beyond those three phrases, the signals are never named, and no later article names them either.
What has changed since is who gets asked to do something about it. The October 2025 explainer promised that "you won't be asked for a selfie" unless the model believes you are under 18 and you want to contest it. The help center's What is Age Assurance? article, published 17 July 2026, says instead that "all users are required to complete an age assurance check," and the pop-up article, edited 29 June 2026, says "most users will be prompted to verify their age automatically when logging in." In late 2025, the check was a silent score with a selfie reserved for the flagged. By mid-2026, the prompt itself was routine at login, with the rollout still described as gradual. The older wording survives in the FAQ, so both promises sit on the same help site on the same day.
Two shortcuts are ruled out by name in the Age Assurance FAQ, edited 1 August 2026: a c.ai+ subscription "does not bypass or override the age assurance process," and a Google account with an age on file does not either. If the pop-up never appears, the path is Settings, then Advanced, then Verify Age, on app and web.
What does the Character AI age check ask for?
It asks for a selfie first, and a government ID only if the selfie does not settle it. The order comes from the explainer, the FAQ and the troubleshooting article edited 11 September 2026:

- Character.AI's model scores the account. If it scores 18+, nothing is asked of you.
- If it scores under 18, you are told, and you can either stay in the under-18 experience or start verification through Persona.
- Persona asks for a selfie, which it uses to estimate your age. Character.AI says this "only takes seconds and doesn't involve giving anyone your ID." The selfie must show your "real, natural appearance." The troubleshooting article says filters, makeup effects or drawn-on changes that make you look older can get the attempt declined, one face only, no masks or sunglasses.
- If Persona "isn't sure you're 18+" from the selfie, it asks for a photo of a physical ID. Eight types are accepted: driver's license, certificate of citizenship, consular ID, identification card, passport, passport card, permanent residence card and immigration visa. A digital or electronic copy of an ID is not accepted.
- Verification can be finished on a different device by scanning the QR code shown during the flow, for anyone whose laptop has no usable camera.
The troubleshooting article closes the door on anything else: "there is no alternative to submitting a selfie or government ID if you are prompted to do so." The FAQ answers "What if I don't have a government ID?" with the statement that without one "the verification process cannot be completed and the account cannot move forward."
Why do adults fail the selfie? Persona's own selfie age estimation article publishes the error margins: a mean absolute error of 2.30 years for people aged 18 to 24, 1.77 years for 13 to 17, and 2.25 years across ages 6 to 70. It recommends customers set "a buffer age threshold of 2.5-3" years above the legal line. If Character.AI follows that advice, a selfie estimated at 20 still lands inside the buffer and drops through to the ID step. The estimate is a number with an error bar, and the ID request is what happens when the error bar crosses 18.
What happens to an account flagged as under 18?
It drops into reading mode. Everything the account already made stays put, but chat is gone. The reading mode article, published 16 June 2026, says an under-18 account "can browse characters and view content on the platform" with chat switched off. It also lists what survives: all past chats "remain saved and viewable," plus creating Characters, scenes and videos, Imagine Chat and AvatarFX, and Feed activity such as stickers and reactions. Nothing gets deleted. The account becomes read-only where it used to be a conversation.
From there, three paths open up. An adult who got flagged by mistake verifies through the selfie flow above and gets chat back. Someone genuinely under 18 stays in reading mode until their birthday, and the July 2026 article says that on turning 18 you should "contact our support team" so they can "reset your verification attempts." That wording tells you attempts are counted and a limit exists, though no article states the number. If you verified and still think you landed in the wrong bracket, file a ticket through the help center's age form. The FAQ says the team "can review and correct your age bracket or restart the process."
What none of these outcomes tells you is which signal put you there in the first place. The selfie and the ID are checks you can see and act on. The score that sent you to them is not.
What happens to your selfie and ID after the check?
Persona holds them. Character.AI never sees them, and Persona deletes them within seven days. The data article, edited 14 July 2026, says "Character.AI does not collect or store any personal data submitted during age verification," that any biometric data or ID "is automatically and permanently deleted within 7 days," and that no deletion request is needed. The FAQ adds that Persona uses the data "to verify your age, identify fraud, and for quality assurance," and names LinkedIn, OpenAI, Block and Etsy as other customers.
Persona's own age assurance overview describes the same chain: existing signals first, a selfie estimate as fallback, then government ID verification paired with a selfie check when the estimate lands near the threshold. Its stated principle is that biometric data "should be processed transiently and deleted immediately after an age determination is made." That's stricter than the seven days Character.AI quotes, so plan around the seven days.
One caveat is written into the FAQ. If Character.AI launches virtual currency or something like it, it "may need to create very limited exceptions" under which it works with Persona to access an ID in fraud cases, with notice and consent first. As of September 2026 that exception is hypothetical.
How do other AI character apps handle age: self-declared or verified?
Most of them take your word for it, and the few that run a check do so only where a law forces one. Character.AI is now the outlier that checks everyone. Its Google Play listing still carries a "Teen" content rating, read on 18 September 2026 from the store page, because under-18s remain allowed in reading mode.

JanitorAI is the clearest example of a check that exists only where required. Its help center article on age verification for Australia, Brazil and the UK, last updated 15 June 2026, says users in those three countries verify through k-ID by an on-device video selfie, a government ID photo, or an existing Discord or Snapchat verification. According to the same article, k-ID "does not store your documents or facial data after verification," and Janitor "receives only a yes/no answer on whether you are over 18." Then comes the line that defines the whole category: "If you are in any other country, your experience is completely unchanged." Outside those three countries, JanitorAI's 18+ rule is a box you tick.
The reason the UK is on that list is Ofcom. Its age-checks guidance under the Online Safety Act names the methods it considers capable of being highly effective: "open banking, photo ID matching, facial age estimation, mobile network operator age checks, credit card checks, digital identity services and email-based age estimation." The same document states that "self-declaration of age and online payments which don't require a person to be 18 are not highly effective," and that Ofcom has chosen "not to introduce numerical thresholds for highly effective age assurance at this stage (e.g. 99% accuracy)." A typed birthday, the method every companion app used until 2025 and most still use, sits on the regulator's rejected list. Character.AI's selfie step sits on the accepted one.
Common Sense Media tested what a typed birthday is actually worth. Its social AI companion risk assessment, published 30 April 2025 with Stanford's Brainstorm Lab and covering Character.AI, Nomi and Replika among others, found that "age gates and terms of service-based restrictions on use by teens were easily circumvented," and rated social AI companions as posing "unacceptable risks to children and teens under age 18." That assessment predates Character.AI's Persona rollout by six months.
As of September 2026, the market splits three ways: everyone checked (Character.AI), checked where the law says so (JanitorAI in three countries), and self-declared everywhere else. The eight apps compared in Character AI alternatives fall almost entirely into the third group.

Frequently asked questions
Does Character AI verify your age?
Yes, since November 2025. Every account gets scored by an in-house age assurance model, and the July 2026 help article states that all users must complete an age assurance check through Persona. A c.ai+ subscription or a Google account age does not skip it.
Why is Character AI asking me for a selfie?
Because its age model scored your account as under 18 and you chose to contest that. The selfie goes to Persona, which estimates your age from it. Character.AI says most people are never asked for an ID.
Does Character AI need my ID?
Only if the selfie leaves Persona unsure you are 18 or older. Eight physical ID types are accepted, digital copies are not, and the help center says there is no alternative to a selfie or ID once you are prompted.
What happens if Character AI thinks I'm under 18?
Your account goes into reading mode. Past chats stay viewable, you can still create Characters, scenes and videos and use Feed, but chat is switched off until you verify as 18+ or turn 18 and ask support to reset your attempts.
How long does Persona keep my selfie or ID?
Character.AI says Persona deletes biometric data and IDs automatically within seven days and that Character.AI never has access to them. Persona's own guidance says biometric data should be deleted immediately after the age determination.
Do other AI character apps check age the same way?
Mostly no. JanitorAI verifies through k-ID only in Australia, Brazil and the UK and leaves every other country unchanged. Most companion apps, YourCrush.AI included, use a declared date of birth, which Ofcom does not count as a highly effective method.
Character.AI now has the strictest age gate in AI character chat, and it still cannot tell a flagged 19-year-old why they were flagged. A selfie with a 2.3-year error bar decides the appeal, and a physical ID decides the tie-break. Every other app in the category asks for a birthday and believes it. The only thing that changes that is a law with a country name on it.
