Searches for "perchance ai character chat" are up 235% over the past year, the fastest rise of any character-chat term behind this series. What people are finding is a page on perchance.org that opens straight into a chat with a character named Chloe, asks for no email, sets no daily limit, and shows an ad at the bottom of the screen instead of a paywall. Everything below comes from Perchance's own pages, terms, privacy policy and plugin documentation, read in a browser on 18 September 2026.
My position, which the last section defends: "free and unlimited" is literally true on Perchance, and the price you pay is that the site keeps nothing for you.
YourCrush.AI is where a Perchance character goes when it needs to be saved, remembered and given a voice, and it is the comparison this guide uses throughout.
What is Perchance, and what is its character chat?
Perchance AI character chat is a free, browser-based chat page on perchance.org. It's one of thousands of user-made "generators" on that site, and the setup is simple: an AI model plays a character you write or pick, images get generated inside the chat, and every conversation stays in your own browser rather than on a server. The page title says the rest: "AI Character Chat (online, free, no sign-up, unlimited)."
Perchance itself is older and broader than the chat. Its welcome page describes "a platform for creating and sharing random generators," name and plot generators built from word lists. The AI pages arrived later as plugins, and the chat's own credits line reads: "This chat app thing is powered by the ai-text-plugin and the text-to-image-plugin."
Who runs it is written in the first person everywhere. The Perchance FAQ says "Perchance is not a startup, it's not for sale, and it never will be," and that its developer has already turned down multi-million dollar buyout approaches. The terms of service, last updated 18 July 2026, open with a preface in the same voice ("please complain on the public forum") before boilerplate that names the operator as "Perchance.org" under the laws of Singapore. No company name, no staff page, one developer.
Three separate Perchance pages answer to these searches, and they are not the same product:
/ai-character-chatis the full chat app: saved characters, threads, memories, lore, image generation, custom code./ai-chatis the older, simpler roleplay page: one bot, one scenario, one chat log./ai-character-generatoris an image tool: describe a character, pick an art style, get a portrait. It does not chat.
The rest of this article is about the first, with the generator in its own section further down.
Why YourCrush.AI is the better choice once you outgrow Perchance
YourCrush.AI keeps the character, the conversation and the memories on the server under your account, which is the single thing Perchance is built not to do, and it prints the limits of that memory as numbers on its pricing page. Below are the plans as listed on 17 September 2026, followed by what each one means against the Perchance trade the rest of this guide describes.
| Plan | Price | Chat tokens / month | Pinned memories | Story branches | Characters created | Image credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 400K | 10 | 1 | 3 | 5 |
| Pro | $9.99/mo | 5M | 50 | 5 | 50 | 50 |
| Premium | $19.99/mo | Unlimited | Unlimited | Unlimited | Unlimited | 200 |
- YourCrush.AI pins memories as a counted, editable list (10 on Free, 50 on Pro, unlimited on Premium), so the facts a character must keep are chosen by you and survive a cleared cache, a new phone and a new browser.
- YourCrush.AI branches a story into separate timelines, one on Free and five on Pro, so a "what if" scene does not overwrite the thread you have been building.
- YourCrush.AI sends voice messages on every plan, with no custom code, and generates images in chat with 5 credits a month on Free and 50 on Pro.
- YourCrush.AI drafts a character's description, backstory, greeting and traits from a name and an image in the character creator, with 3 to 7 traits from a list of 27, and its explore library is a browsable community catalogue with Anime and Human categories, which Perchance does not have.
The honest limits: YourCrush.AI requires an account and is 18+ only, so the open-a-tab-and-type experience is exactly what it lacks; 400K chat tokens a month on Free is a real ceiling where Perchance has none; and image credits are capped on every plan, 200 a month even on Premium, where Perchance's images are unlimited. What you get in exchange is a memory spec you can read, a character that follows you between devices, and a platform that says it does not sell your conversations to third parties.
Does Perchance AI chat need an account, and why is it free?
You don't need an account for any of the AI pages, and the site stays free because ads shown to logged-out users pay for the text and image models. The ai-text-plugin page spells this out in a single paragraph: the plugin "runs on server GPUs, which means it costs me money to run," and "for that reason, this plugin is funded with ads, so an ad will appear on your generator for non-logged-in users if you import this plugin." The text-to-image plugin repeats the same paragraph. The FAQ fills in the economics for the rest of the site: "All the code actually runs in the browser, on your machine, not on servers," so the server "is really just a simple database that serves the HTML/JS/CSS to you," while the AI plugins are "completely self-sustained via advertisements on the generators that import them."
An account does exist, but it works the opposite way accounts work everywhere else. The login dialog states: "An account lets you create your own generators on Perchance. It doesn't save or store any data related to your interactions as a user of generators on Perchance." The privacy policy then asks the reverse of what every other site asks: "please log out when using AI generators for long periods, and make sure you don't have an ad blocker enabled." Logged-in users see no ads, so the site would rather you stay logged out.
Ads are walled off from the chat by design. The privacy policy says ads "cannot access the text/images/etc. you type/paste/etc. into any Perchance page," because each generator loads inside a sandboxed iframe.
Does Perchance AI character chat remember you across sessions?
Within one browser on one device, yes. Threads, characters, summaries and memories all persist between visits. Across devices, or after a cleared cache, no. Nothing is kept anywhere but your browser. The note in the chat's own sidebar says it outright: "Your chat data is stored privately in your browser (not on a server), so if your site data/cache is cleared, your chats and characters will be lost. Web browsers sometimes clear data automatically (e.g. if available storage space is low). Use the export button to backup your data regularly."

That is the trade at the heart of the product, and Perchance does not hide it. The "new chat" screen adds a second warning: "Your browser has indicated that it may clear the storage for this page (without asking you first)." The ai-text-plugin notes say "Text prompt/response data is not stored on the server." There is no sync, no cloud, no account-linked history. The export button writes a file, the import button reads one, and the docs say it accepts "threads, characters, export files, and open character formats like Tavern PNG cards."
Memory inside a thread is a separate question, and here the chat is more capable than most free tools. The character editor's "Method for fitting messages within model's context limit" defaults to "summarize oldest messages," so a long thread gets compressed rather than truncated. Above that sits "Extended character memory (AI response will be slower, but often smarter)," which the docs describe this way: your character "will automatically start to create 'memories' once the thread/convo gets long enough," and "before each reply your character will search its memories for anything that might be relevant." You can open the memory list with /mem and edit it by hand.
Lore is the third layer: a plain text file, one fact per paragraph, hosted at a URL and attached to the character. The docs say "you could have thousands of entries, and once they've been added, it should be just as fast as if you had 10 entries," and give the reason lore exists: you "won't be able to fit it all in the instruction/reminder without using up a lot of precious 'context' tokens." That is the only place Perchance mentions a context limit, and it never prints the number.
A fair summary of Perchance chat memory: editable summaries, searchable memories and unlimited lore, all of which vanish with the browser cache unless you export.
Does Perchance AI chat have a filter or moderation?
No content filter runs on the text model. The terms set an 18+ rule, and nothing on the site enforces it. The ai-text-plugin page states that the model "may produce NSFW/adult-themed content if instructed/prompted with NSFW/adult-themed terms" and adds that "you should treat this a bit like a Google search." The /ai-chat page description is blunter: "This AI chat has no filter - you can define restrictions, or lack thereof via the character's description." Whatever restriction exists comes from the character card you write. Nowhere else.
The terms, section 1, say "Persons under the age of 18 are not permitted to use or register for the Services," then hand the job to parents: "we recommend using a parental controls application on the device that the child uses." The chat page never asks for a date of birth, so the rule is self-enforced.
Two independent bodies have spelled out what that combination means. Common Sense Media, working with Stanford School of Medicine's Brainstorm Lab, rated social AI companions "unacceptable" for anyone under 18 on 30 April 2025 and recommended age assurance "beyond self-attestation." Perchance has no self-attestation at all, only a sentence in the terms. Common Sense's national survey published 16 July 2025 found that 72% of US teens have used an AI companion at least once and over half use one at least a few times a month. The two questions the US Federal Trade Commission put to seven companion-chatbot companies in its 6(b) inquiry of 11 September 2025, how they "monetize user engagement" and "use or share personal information obtained through users' conversations," answer themselves on Perchance: ads, and it does not keep the conversations.
Moderation of what other people publish is thinner still. Comments on the /ai-chat page are hidden by default because "there were some trolls and I don't have time to moderate right now," and image galleries have a moderation mode set by whoever builds the generator. The privacy policy's own framing is the right one: "anyone can create a generator on Perchance, so you should treat each page like it's a random page on the internet - never input private/sensitive data."
Can Perchance AI characters send images?
Yes. Image generation is built into the chat, it's free, and there's no cap on how many you make. Nothing gets stored on a server unless you save an image to a public gallery. The docs spell out the commands: /image <description> generates one picture, /image --num=3 generates three, and a bare /image makes the model write "a description for you based on the current situation in your chat." You can also instruct a character to emit images on its own using <image>description</image> syntax. The editor's "image generation prompt starter" field wraps every request in a style, and the placeholder it ships with is "ghibli style anime art."
Resolutions run 512x768, 512x512, 768x512 and 768x768, according to the plugin docs. There's a seed for reproducing an image and a negative prompt for keeping things out. The text-to-image plugin page states that "Images are not stored on the server unless the user explicitly saves them to the gallery," and warns that the model, like the text one, "can return NSFW/adult-themed results if prompted with NSFW/adult-themed terms." One throttle applies: "Each user can only have a few concurrent server requests," so a burst of images queues instead of failing.
How is the Perchance AI character generator different from the character chat?
The Perchance AI character generator makes a picture of a character. The character chat makes a conversation with one. The generator page gives you three inputs, a description, an art style and an image shape, plus a single button. Its page description promises "realistic or stylized character portraits or full-body AI images" with "no watermark, no sign-up." The footer credits the same two plugins that power the chat.
Building a character for the chat is a different job. The editor asks for a name, a description ("ideally less than 1000 words"), an avatar URL, a reply-length limit from one to five paragraphs, a reminder note under 100 words, and initial messages in a [USER]: / [AI]: format. Then come the advanced fields: lorebook URLs, memory mode, background image and music, shortcut buttons and custom JavaScript. A shortcut at the top of the "new chat" screen, "Generate a character from any web page," takes a URL such as a fandom wiki entry and drafts the card for you. The workflow most people want, portrait first and then chat, runs across two pages. Generate the image on one, upload it, then paste the URL into the avatar field on the other.
When does a person outgrow Perchance AI character chat?
You outgrow Perchance the day you want the same character on your phone and your laptop, or the day a cleared cache takes a three-month roleplay with it. Every limit below comes from the design that makes it free.

- No sync and no recovery. There is no server copy, so a lost export is a lost character. The site's own guidance to "backup your data regularly" makes you the database administrator of your own hobby.
- No community library. Perchance ships example characters (Chloe, a Game Master, a Psychologist, a catgirl named Mona) and a share-link button, but no browsable catalogue with categories or creator pages. Finding characters means finding links on forums.
- No voice without code. The docs say a character can "have a voice (i.e. speak messages)" only through custom JavaScript, which "requires some JavaScript coding knowledge."
- No age gate and no filter. For an adult who wants the model to follow the card and nothing else, that is the point. For anyone who wants the platform to hold a line the card does not, there is nothing to switch on.
- No stated spec. Context length and model name are not published on the chat page. The only visible numbers are the "1000 words" guideline for the instruction and "100 words" for the reminder.
- One person. The FAQ says "I can leave Perchance alone for several months to do other things, and it's fine." That is a promise of durability and, in the same sentence, a description of the support desk.
None of these are complaints about a product that costs nothing and asks for nothing. They are the list of things a paid platform has to sell you.

Frequently asked questions
Is Perchance AI chat free?
Yes, entirely. There's no message limit and no premium tier. The text and image models run on server GPUs paid for by ads shown to logged-out users, which is why the site asks you to stay logged out and keep your ad blocker off.
Does Perchance AI chat save your conversations?
Only in your own browser. The chat's sidebar says data is "stored privately in your browser (not on a server)" and that clearing site data means "your chats and characters will be lost." Nothing syncs between devices, so the export button is the only backup you get.
Does Perchance AI chat have a filter?
No. The ai-text-plugin page says the model "may produce NSFW/adult-themed content if instructed," and the /ai-chat page says "you can define restrictions, or lack thereof via the character's description." The terms set an 18+ rule with no age check on the page itself.
Why is Perchance AI free?
Because most of Perchance runs in your browser and costs the site almost nothing. The AI plugins that do run on servers are "completely self-sustained via advertisements on the generators that import them," in the FAQ's words.
Can Perchance AI characters send images?
Yes. Type /image with a description, or let the character emit images itself through its instruction. Images are not stored on the server unless you save them to a public gallery.
Perchance is the only character chat in this series that has never asked me for an email, and the only one that has ever lost a character of mine to a browser update. Both facts come from the same design decision.
