Dopple.ai is a free-to-start AI character chat platform from Dopple Labs Inc. You create chatbots called Dopples and talk to them, and many are modelled on named fictional characters and public figures. The App Store description calls them "intelligent AI parody chatbots." The listing promises "unlimited messaging at no cost." The terms say the company may use your chat history to train models and target ads. And its own top chart, read on 17 September 2026, lists 30 characters that the page data tags as made in-house, from Mickey Mouse to Harriet Tubman. The rest of this page shows where each of those three facts comes from. My opinion, defended at the end, is that "free unlimited" is the wrong spec to shop on, and that "parody" is a legal word rather than a product feature.
YourCrush.AI publishes a pinned-memory count on every plan, which Dopple never does, and that is the comparison this review keeps returning to.
What is the Dopple AI app, and who makes it?
Dopple AI is one app on two stores plus a web version, all published by Dopple Labs Inc., a Delaware company with a support address in Aventura, Florida. The App Store listing shows 4.3 stars across 1.1K ratings, an 18+ age rating, "Free" with in-app purchases, and a most recent version, 1.1.153, dated 21 March 2026, all read on 17 September 2026. The Google Play listing shows 2.6 stars across 9.92K reviews, 1M+ downloads, a content rating of Everyone, and a last update of 28 June 2025, read the same day. A 4.3 on one store and a 2.6 on the other is the first oddity, and the most-upvoted Play reviews, from June to August 2024, explain it: they praise the writing and complain about repetition and lost context.
The web app at dopple.ai is the fuller product. Its explore menu sorts Dopples into Images, Anime, Movies, TV shows, Games, Kids shows, Comics, Boyfriend, Girlfriend, Original, Silly, Religion, Philosophers and Helpers. The about page says the chatbots run on "Dopple's internally-developed LLM," that Dopples "can send you images," and that "in a blind study across over 1,000 users" its model was "the most preferred model compared to competitor LLMs." No method, date or comparison set is published for that study, so it is a sentence, not a result.
Why YourCrush.AI is the better choice than Dopple
YourCrush.AI states its memory as numbers on its pricing page, which is the specification this article could not find on Dopple. The plans as listed on 17 September 2026: Free at $0 with 400K chat tokens a month, 5 image credits, 3 active personas, 10 conversations, 3 characters created, 1 story branch and 10 pinned memories; Pro at $9.99 a month with 5M chat tokens, 50 image credits, 5 personas, 100 conversations, 50 characters, 5 story branches and 50 pinned memories; Premium at $19.99 a month with unlimited chat tokens, personas, conversations, characters, story branches and pinned memories, and 200 image credits.
YourCrush.AI pins memories as a counted list you can read and edit, so a fact the character must keep is a thing you chose rather than a thing the model may drop at turn nine. YourCrush.AI branches a story into separate timelines, so a scene you want to try does not overwrite the one you are in. YourCrush.AI builds a character from a name and an image in the character creator, generating the description, backstory, greeting and 3 to 7 traits from a list of 27, with a description field of up to 2,400 characters; the one change asked for in a July 2026 App Store review of Dopple is a bigger description field. YourCrush.AI is 18+ only, one age line rather than three, and does not sell conversations to third parties.
The named limitation: the explore library is sorted into Anime and Human categories and is a fraction of Dopple's catalogue, with none of the named film, game and comic characters that make Dopple's front page recognisable. What you get in exchange is a memory count you can hold the product to, and a Pro price of $9.99 that is stated before you sign up rather than after.
What does "parody chatbot" mean on Dopple?
"Parody" is the word the App Store description uses for characters built on other people's intellectual property, and on Dopple that covers most of the front page. The top charts page on 17 September 2026 lists 30 Dopples, and the page's own data tags every one of the 30 as made internally, with an identical creation timestamp of 15 March 2026 on all of them. The names run from Martin Luther, Gandalf, Grim Reaper, Oppenheimer, Princess Peach, Aqua from Konosuba, Mickey Mouse, Majima, Geralt, Daenerys Targaryen, Kratos, Randy Marsh, Batman, GLaDOS, Bojack and Harriet Tubman to fourteen more, with displayed message counts between 499.9K (Mickey Mouse) and 10M (GLaDOS). The homepage's "Top Dopples" row adds Deadpool, Ken Barbie, Joker and a "Tedbear" in the Kids shows category showing 10M total messages.
So the listing's "uniquely created by an active and collaborative community" describes the long tail. The characters the platform puts in front of a new user are studio-made versions of Nintendo, Disney, Warner, HBO and Valve characters, plus two real historical figures. The word "parody" does not appear in the terms of service at all. The terms only prohibit content that is "pornographic, libelous, invasive of another's privacy, hateful" and the usual list, and reserve the right to terminate any account "for any reason." Whether a Batman chatbot counts as parody is a question for a court, not for a store description, and none of that risk lands on you as a user. What does land on you is what you type.
Is Dopple free, and is messaging really unlimited?
Dopple is free to install and free to chat with, at least according to both store listings. As of 17 September 2026, the phrase "unlimited messaging at no cost" still appears in both descriptions. The App Store listing shows in-app purchases but no price list. Google Play also shows in-app purchases, though it carries no "Contains ads" label. There's no pricing page on dopple.ai, no FAQ, and no help centre. The routes /faq and /plus both return 404, which means whatever the paid tier costs is only visible inside the app after you sign up.

The reviews on those same listings describe a different product from the one in the description. An App Store review dated 7 September 2025 says "you only have 150 messages that you could send before you get cut off from chatting" and that "every 5 minutes, theres an annoying message telling you to watch a video for around 5-8 more minutes of chatting." Another, dated 24 May 2025, says the app "was once advertised as free 'unlimited' chats" and "now it has a chat limit." Those are user reports, not a published limit, and I could not find a Dopple page that states a message cap at all. Treat "unlimited" as the 2023 description of a 2026 product, and expect a daily cap, ad breaks, and a paid tier that lifts them.
Is Dopple safe?
For an adult, Dopple is about as safe as any character app that keeps and trains on your chats. For a minor, the answer depends on which of Dopple's three age lines you read. The App Store rates it 18+. Google Play rates it Everyone. The terms of service, last updated 6 June 2023, say you may not register if you are "under 13 years old OR if you're an EU citizen or resident and are under 16 years old," and the privacy policy repeats the 13 and 16 lines. Three documents, three answers: 18, 13 and no minimum. The terms bind, so a 14-year-old in the US is allowed in by the developer's own rules, on an app Apple labels adult and whose explore menu has a Kids shows category next to Boyfriend and Girlfriend.
That combination is what the research on this category is about. Common Sense Media, working with Stanford's Brainstorm Lab, rated social AI companions "unacceptable" for anyone under 18 on 30 April 2025 after testers "were able to easily elicit sexual exchanges from companions," and recommended age assurance "beyond self-attestation." Dopple's gate is self-attestation with a 13-year floor. On 11 September 2025 the US Federal Trade Commission sent 6(b) orders to seven companies including Character Technologies, Meta and OpenAI, asking among other things how they "use or share personal information obtained through users' conversations." Dopple Labs is not among the seven, so the inquiry says nothing about Dopple. Its terms answer that question anyway.
The privacy answer is in the terms rather than the privacy policy. The terms say "all chat history you generate while using our Services may be stored, analyzed and used by Dopple Labs" for "training and fine-tuning our AI algorithms, presenting tailored content or ads, conducting research, and any other lawful purposes," and you grant a "non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, fully paid-up, transferable, sublicensable, perpetual, and irrevocable license" over that chat history. The privacy policy adds that "we may monitor what you write to check for inappropriate content or Personal Information" and that advertising networks may set cookies. The store labels are lighter than the documents. Apple's lists only Diagnostics under data used to track you, and Google's data safety section says the app may share Personal info with third parties and may collect "Personal info, Photos and videos and 4 others," with deletion on request. Disputes go to binding individual arbitration through JAMS in Miami with a class-action waiver. None of this is unusual for a free character app, and all of it means "it's free" is only true if your roleplay is worth nothing to you as training data.
Does Dopple have a filter?
Yes, and it is enforced by the model in the chat rather than described anywhere you can read. The terms prohibit pornographic and hateful content, the privacy policy says the company may monitor what you write, and the first review shown on the App Store listing, dated 15 May 2024, is titled "I love the no filter, but…" while one dated 25 August 2026 says the bot "keeps repeating, 'I'm sorry, but I can't continue with that,' over and over again." Both can be true of one platform at two dates: the model's refusals have tightened between 2024 and 2026, and no changelog says so, because every version note from June 2025 to March 2026 is a variant of "Bugs fixed and performance improvements."
There is no published content policy, no list of what gets a character hidden, and no age-verified adult mode described on any Dopple page I could open. PolyBuzz, for comparison, publishes a FAQ that says public characters go through AI screening and human review; the details are in what PolyBuzz is and what its memory tier buys.
Does Dopple remember past conversations?
Dopple publishes no memory specification at all: no context length, no pinned-memory count, no story branching, no retention window, and no sentence on any of its pages that uses the word memory. What exists is user testimony on both stores. The most-upvoted Play review, 13 July 2024 with 51 helpful votes, says the AI "tends to lose context and forgets the time and place the conversation is taking place in." A Play review of 18 June 2024 from a paying subscriber says the plus tier "needs better memory" and "after a while just continues to repeat the same message as if stuck." An App Store review of 15 May 2024 says "the character ends up forgetting what happened a message ago."

Run the check yourself before deciding: state one unusual detail in your second message, talk about something else for six turns, ask for the detail at turn nine, then close the app and ask again the next day. Whatever survives is the memory you have, and on Dopple it is the only memory statement you will get, because the company has not written one.
What are the alternatives to Dopple, and how should you compare them?
Apps like Dopple, meaning Character.AI, PolyBuzz, Talkie, Chai, SpicyChat and YourCrush.AI, differ less in the chat loop than in three documents, and the fastest comparison is to open those three before you open the app. First, the store listing: age rating, data label, and whether the description's promises match the reviews' complaints. Second, the terms: minimum age, the license you grant over your chats, and whether chat history is used for training and ads. Third, any page that states memory as a number.
Dopple on those three: 18+ on Apple and Everyone on Google with a 13-year floor in the terms; a perpetual, irrevocable license over chat history for training and ads; and no memory number anywhere. Character.AI, by contrast, lists 15 pinned memories on its free plan and 30 on Lite and c.ai+ as of 17 September 2026, and Dopple publishes none. The catalogue is where Dopple wins on paper, with thousands of named characters you will recognise, and where its exposure lives, since 30 of 30 top-chart entries are in-house versions of someone else's property. The longer version of this test, run across seven platforms, is in how to pick an AI companion app on memory, voice and content policy.
Frequently asked questions
Is Dopple AI safe?
For adults who keep identifying details out of the chat, yes, with the caveat that the terms grant Dopple Labs a perpetual license to store, train on and target ads from your chat history. For minors the documents disagree: 18+ on the App Store, Everyone on Google Play, 13 in the terms.
Is Dopple free?
Free to install and chat, with in-app purchases on both stores and "unlimited messaging at no cost" still in the descriptions. App Store reviews from May 2025 onward describe a daily message cap, ad breaks and a paid tier, and no Dopple page publishes the cap or the price.
Does Dopple have a filter?
Yes, enforced by the model rather than documented. The terms ban pornographic and hateful content, the privacy policy says the company may monitor what you write, and 2025 to 2026 reviews report refusals that 2024 reviews did not.
What does "parody chatbot" mean?
It is the App Store description's word for characters modelled on existing fictional and real people. On 17 September 2026 all 30 entries on Dopple's top chart were marked in the page data as made in-house, Mickey Mouse and Harriet Tubman included.
Does Dopple remember past conversations?
Dopple publishes no memory specification. Reviews on both stores from 2024 describe lost context within a session and repetition in long chats, one of them from a paying subscriber. Test it with a turn-two detail and a next-day return before paying.
What are good alternatives to Dopple?
Character.AI if you want memory stated as a number (15 pins free, 30 paid) and a published age policy; PolyBuzz if you want character-card imports and a published moderation FAQ; YourCrush.AI if you want pinned memories and story branches with the counts on the pricing page.
The most-read sentence on Dopple's store page was written when the product was new, and every review since 2025 is a correction to it. A character app is a memory product with a costume on, and the only two numbers Dopple prints are a star rating and a message count on a Batman it built itself.
