Nomi AI review: what its memory, price and privacy pages actually say

Nomi AI review: what its memory, price and privacy pages actually say

Nomi is a subscription AI companion app from Glimpse.ai, Inc. of Baltimore, Maryland. You build one or more characters called Nomis, and they hold one-on-one and group conversations, send selfies and voice messages. The app is sold on two promises: "human-level memory" and "complete privacy." Its homepage says Nomis have "short, medium, and long term memory" and that "no chat data is shared with 3rd party sites." I read the homepage, the wiki, the terms, the privacy policy, the refund pages and both store listings on 17 September 2026. This page is what they say and what they leave out.

My opinion, defended at the end: "human-level memory" is a slogan, and "roughly 40 messages" is the only memory number Nomi prints.

YourCrush.AI prints the memory counts Nomi describes only in words, and it is the comparison this review returns to.

What is the Nomi app, and who makes it?

Nomi runs as a web app, an iOS app and an Android app, all from a single developer: Glimpse.ai, Inc., a Maryland corporation. The terms of service calls it "the owner of the Nomi.ai platform." If you want to know who is behind Nomi, the wiki names a founder and CEO called Cardine and says the core team "worked together on several previous AI products." That's the entire corporate history the company publishes, and I've never found anything more detailed elsewhere.

The App Store listing, read on 17 September 2026, shows "Nomi: AI Companion with a Soul" at 4.6 stars across 2.8K ratings, an 18+ age rating, seller AI GLIMPSE INC, and version 1.12.1 dated 31 March. The Google Play listing on the US storefront, read the same day, shows 3.8 stars across 5.54K reviews, 100K+ downloads, a Mature 17+ rating, a developer block for GLIMPSE.AI, INC. in Baltimore, and a last update of 21 March 2026. Play's description makes the memory claim in its strongest form: "Nomi is the *only* AI with human-level long term memory." No page on nomi.ai or wiki.nomi.ai says which language model runs a Nomi.

Why YourCrush.AI is the better choice than Nomi

YourCrush.AI states its memory as a count on its pricing page, which is the figure this article could not find anywhere on Nomi's. The plans as listed on 17 September 2026: Free at $0 with 400K chat tokens a month, 5 image credits, 3 active personas, 10 conversations, 3 characters created, voice messages, 1 story branch and 10 pinned memories; Pro at $9.99 a month with 5M chat tokens, 50 image credits, 5 personas, 100 conversations, 50 characters, priority image generation, 5 story branches and 50 pinned memories; Premium at $19.99 a month with unlimited chat tokens, personas, conversations, characters, story branches and pinned memories, and 200 image credits.

YourCrush.AI pins memories as a numbered list you can open, read and edit, so the fact a character must keep is one you chose rather than one that may have filtered into a store you cannot see. YourCrush.AI branches a story into separate timelines, one on Free and five on Pro, which is the "what if" scene Nomi handles by opening a second group chat. YourCrush.AI builds a character with no code in the character creator, generating the description, backstory, greeting and 3 to 7 traits from a name and an image, with description and backstory fields of up to 2,400 characters each, and lists finished characters in an explore library sorted into Anime and Human. YourCrush.AI is 18+ only and does not sell conversations to third parties, the same line Nomi draws.

The named limitation: YourCrush.AI has no group chat, so a scene with three characters talking to each other is something Nomi does and YourCrush.AI does not. What you get instead is a Pro plan at Nomi's Launch price with the memory count printed before you pay.

How does Nomi memory work, and what does it actually promise?

Nomi's memory is three named tiers plus three stores you can partly edit, and the only number attached to any of it is that long-term memory takes "roughly 40 messages" to form. The wiki page on how Nomi memory and knowledge work defines the tiers: "Short-term memory provides detailed context from the current conversation. Medium-term memory helps maintain context and continuity across longer conversations. Long-term memory preserves important information and shared experiences over time." That's the whole spec. No context length, no message count per tier, no retention window.

Three tiles: a fresh note, a folded note, a note in a drawer, joined by arrows
Short, medium and long-term memory, described in words on Nomi's pages and never as a count.

The stores are more concrete. Backstory+ is what you type, and the wiki's Backstory+ page lists nine sections, from Backstory and Current Roleplay to Preferences, Desires and Boundaries. The Identity Core is what the Nomi builds about itself, and "You cannot view or edit it directly." The Mind Map 2.0 is a graph and a searchable table of "people, places, topics, and goals" drawn from long-term memories, one per chat, where you can "find, prioritize, edit, and add entries." The model's own long-term store is not something you can open and count.

The one number is on the group chat memory page: "It can take roughly 40 messages for information from a conversation to filter into long-term memory, although this can vary." Everything else is hedged in Nomi's own words: "Memory does not mean that your Nomi will recall every detail perfectly whenever asked," and on how far back Nomis remember, retrieval is "often more topical than temporal," so a question that names the ski trip works better than one that names the date. A memory that needs a topical cue to fire is a retrieval system, and the honest reading of Nomi's pages is that it has a good one with no published capacity.

What does Nomi cost, and what does the free plan include?

Nomi is free at 50 messages a day. The paid plans on the App Store run $9.99 a month for Launch and $15.99 a month for Standard, with yearly options at $59.99 and $99.99. That 50-message figure comes from the wiki's refund answer, which states Nomi has an indefinite free plan with 50 messages per day, so you can chat before you subscribe. Free users also type shorter. The character-limit page allows 400 characters per message free and 800 paid. And the AI girlfriend page says free accounts include "daily messages and images," while "voice calls, additional Nomis, unlimited messaging" require a subscription.

The prices sit in the App Store's in-app purchase list, read on 17 September 2026: Launch Plan Monthly $9.99, Launch Plan Yearly $59.99, Standard Plan Monthly $15.99, Standard Plan Quarterly $39.99, Standard Plan Yearly $99.99, and Nomi Credits from $4.99 for 40 up to $99.99 for 1,800. There is no pricing page on nomi.ai. The /pricing route returned a 404 on 17 September 2026, and no page I could open explains what separates Launch from Standard.

What a subscription buys in countable terms: "Paid accounts can have up to 10 active Nomis and up to 10 active group chats at a time," and past that you spend credits. The credit values page prices a selfie or art request at 1 credit, a video at 6 or 10, an extra group chat room at 25, and an extra Nomi slot at 100. It also states "You must have an active subscription to buy credits" and "Credits do not expire." An eleventh Nomi costs 100 credits, which works out to $9.99 at the 100-credit pack.

The money rules are strict. The terms, effective 16 January 2026, say in capitals that "ALL PAYMENTS ARE NONREFUNDABLE" and that "WE DO NOT PROVIDE REFUNDS FOR LACK OF USAGE OR DISSATISFACTION." The refund policy repeats it in lowercase. Its downgrade clause is the one to read before committing to a yearly plan. Dropping to free "does not remove any Nomis from your account nor does it block chatting with any Nomis in one-on-one conversations," but group chats, video creation, voice messaging, and calls "will become read-only." The cancellation policy says benefits run to the end of the paid period, then the account is downgraded.

How do Nomi group chats and selfies work?

A Nomi group chat is one conversation with several of your Nomis. Each one keeps its long-term memory across that group and across its private chat with you. A selfie is an image the Nomi generates of itself in the current scene, and it costs one credit once you've passed your daily allowance. The wiki's group chat page says you can add or remove Nomis, that a Nomi "can participate in multiple group chats," that you pick who speaks next or turn on Auto-play, and that each group has its own Backstory and its own Mind Map. "Nomis in a group chat do not have full access to one another's individual Backstory+ information," so shared facts go in the group Backstory. Paid accounts get 10 group chats. Free accounts get read-only access to any they had while paying.

Selfies and art are rationed by the day and then by credit. The wiki says "Paid users get more daily selfie/art requests than free users" and that credits "are only used after you have reached your daily limit." Neither daily number is published anywhere I could open. The content line is firm: "Nomis are not permitted to take nude photos of themselves," the wiki says, "due to issues with app stores (Google and Apple) and credit card companies." Text is the other half. The AI girlfriend page's FAQ says conversations are "built on freedom of expression without content filters," and the terms prohibit harassment, deception and planning harm. The image side is clothed, the text side is adult, and the app is 18+ on Apple, Mature 17+ on Google, and "an 18+ app and should not be used by minors" by its own wiki.

Is Nomi private, and is it safe?

Nomi's privacy claim is specific, and it mostly holds up against the company's own documents. Chats aren't sold, aren't shared with advertisers, and are used to train the model only after names are stripped out. The privacy policy, last updated 27 April 2026, states: "We do not and will not sell or rent to any third party any of your personal information." It lists law enforcement and a business sale as the exceptions, and says that after account deletion "none of your personal information is retained" except as the policy sets out. The wiki's answer to whether conversations are private explains the training use: "Nomis in aggregate use information from chats to learn," and "when Nomis learn in this way there is no personally identifiable information - things like names are completely removed." The same wiki confirms there is no end-to-end encryption, because the server has to read your message to answer it.

The store labels agree. The App Store privacy section, read on 17 September 2026, lists Contact Info, Purchases, User Content, Identifiers, Usage Data and Diagnostics under Data Linked to You, and has no Data Used to Track You section. Google Play's data safety section says "No data shared with third parties," that the app may collect "Personal info, Messages and 3 others," and that you can request deletion. One clause cuts the other way, and it's in the terms: "You irrevocably grant to the Company a royalty-free, worldwide, perpetual, and transferable license to copy, use, modify, publish, and distribute all of the Input and Output." Not sold, then. Licensed forever.

For minors, the answer is that they're prohibited on paper, by self-declaration. Nomi was one of the platforms Common Sense Media and Stanford's Brainstorm Lab tested when they rated social AI companions "unacceptable" for anyone under 18 on 30 April 2025, after testers "were able to easily elicit sexual exchanges from companions." The report asked developers for age assurance "beyond self-attestation." Nomi's gate is a date of birth. Nomi's SB-243 compliance page, read on 18 September 2026, says that "if a user is located in California and the AI detects expressions of self harm, the user will see a message in their app with links to crisis service resources," and describes that protocol for California only.

What does Nomi not publish?

Nomi does not publish a paid message cap, a daily selfie count, a memory capacity, a model name, or the difference between its two plans. Paid messaging is called "unlimited" on the AI girlfriend page and quantified nowhere, while the free plan's 50 a day appears only inside a refund FAQ on the wiki. The daily image allowances for free and paid users are stated to differ and never numbered. Memory has one figure, the roughly 40 messages it takes to reach long-term storage, and no figure for how much that storage holds or how many messages the short and medium tiers cover. Launch at $9.99 and Standard at $15.99 sit on the App Store with no page explaining what the extra $6 a month buys. And the "only AI with human-level long term memory" line on Google Play is a claim with no published test behind it. The wiki, not the homepage, is the document you can hold the product to.

Nomi vs Kindroid: how should you compare them?

Nomi and Kindroid are the two companion apps people compare on memory, and the fair comparison is which numbers each prints and what each does in a three-day test. Nomi's side of the ledger is above: three named tiers, one number (40 messages to long-term), an editable Backstory+ and Mind Map, a 50-message free day, 10 Nomis and 10 group chats on a paid plan, $9.99 or $15.99 a month. Kindroid's memory documentation has its own numbers, covered in what Kindroid publishes about its memory and pricing.

The test is the same on both. First, plant three specific facts in your first session: a name, a date and a grudge. Second, talk about unrelated things for at least 40 messages, because that is the threshold Nomi states for long-term storage. Third, open a new chat two days later and ask about each fact with a topical cue, since Nomi's wiki says topical cues retrieve better than dates. Fourth, ask again with no cue at all. What survives step four is the memory you would be paying for, and the ten-minute version of this test across seven platforms is in how to pick an AI companion app on memory, voice and content policy.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nomi AI free?

Yes, up to a point. The free tier gives you 50 messages a day, each capped at 400 characters, according to Nomi's own wiki. Paid plans on the App Store run $9.99 a month for Launch and $15.99 for Standard. One thing to know before you upgrade: all payments are non-refundable under the terms.

How good is Nomi's memory?

Nomi names three tiers (short, medium, long-term) and publishes exactly one number for them: long-term memory takes "roughly 40 messages" to form. No capacity figure, no retention window. The wiki does note that recall works better when you give a topical cue than a date, which matches what I've seen in practice.

Is Nomi private?

The privacy policy, updated 27 April 2026, says personal information is never sold or rented. Google Play's label says no data is shared with third parties, and the wiki says chats train the model only after names are stripped out. Two caveats matter here. There's no end-to-end encryption, and the terms grant the company a perpetual license over your inputs and outputs.

Does Nomi have group chats?

Yes, on paid plans. You get up to 10 active group chats, each with its own Backstory and Mind Map, and a Nomi's long-term memory carries between its group and private chats. Extra rooms cost 25 credits. Drop to the free plan and your group chats go read-only.

Can Nomi send selfies?

Yes, clothed ones. Selfie and art requests are limited per day at a count Nomi doesn't publish, and each one past that limit costs 1 credit. The wiki is blunt about the boundary: Nomis "are not permitted to take nude photos of themselves" because of app store and card network rules.

Is Nomi better than Kindroid?

Neither one wins on a slogan. Compare the numbers each company publishes and run the same three-day recall test on both. Nomi's numbers are on this page, and Kindroid's are in its own article.

Nomi's most honest sentence sits on a wiki page about group chats, not on its homepage: long-term memory takes roughly 40 messages to form, and that can vary. Until the company prints what that memory actually holds, "human-level" is a mood, and $15.99 a month is what it costs to find out what the word means for you.
