Six years after the accident, Rika's cursed spirit is still with Yuta, and it kills the bullies who torment him. Jujutsu society decides he has to be executed (Wikipedia, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 film). In November 2016, Satoru Gojo enrolls him at Tokyo Jujutsu High instead, which saves his life, and puts him in a class with Maki Zen'in, Toge Inumaki and Panda.
The turn comes at the end of the film, after Yuta's fight with Suguru Geto.

Gojo tells Yuta the truth: Yuta cursed Rika, not the other way round. He could not accept her death, and his desire for her to survive turned her into a cursed spirit, a power he drew from his ancestor Sugawara no Michizane (Wikipedia, Jujutsu Kaisen 0). The curse breaks, Rika passes on peacefully, and Yuta stays a sorcerer. He keeps wearing her engagement ring (Wikipedia, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 film).

How does Yuta still have Rika?
The Rika who follows him in the main story is not Rika Orimoto. In chapter 178, Yuta explains that "Rika and Rika Orimoto are two different beings": Rika Orimoto's soul passed on, and "Rika" is now his cursed technique, which stores cursed energy for him (Screen Rant).
When Yuta returns at chapter 137, Wikipedia describes what follows him as a "replica he calls Rika" (Wikipedia, Yuta Okkotsu). That replica is what makes his cursed technique work. Most fans call it Copy. He can copy the technique of anyone whose body part Rika has eaten, and while linked to Rika through the ring he can hold that connection for five minutes at a time, which the story reveals in chapter 178 (Game Rant, CBR).
Why does Yuta want to kill Yuji?
He doesn't, in the end. After Shibuya, headquarters reinstates Yuji's execution and names Yuta as executioner. Yuta enters a binding vow with the elders and says he resents Yuji because Toge Inumaki lost an arm in Sukuna's rampage (ComicBook, Dexerto).
The order lands in chapter 137, with about ten million cursed spirits loose across Japan (ComicBook). Yuta finds Yuji, and the anime's Season 3 opens on that confrontation.
Spoiler: whether Yuta goes through with killing Yuji
It's a fake. Gojo had asked Yuta in advance, when they met in Africa, to look after Yuji if anything happened to Gojo. Yuta stops Yuji's heart for a moment to satisfy the vow, then revives him with reverse cursed technique (chapter 140 or so, Season 3 episode 1, "Execution") (Dexerto, Wikipedia, Season 3).
Our reading: from here on, Yuta's choices run on trust in Gojo. He's following a teacher's instructions while his teacher is sealed away.
What does Yuta do in Season 3?
He fakes Yuji's execution in the first episode, then heads to the Sendai colony of the Culling Game, where he kills the reincarnated sorcerers Uro and Ishigori (Wikipedia, Yuta Okkotsu). That fight is where the season ends. Episode 12, "Sendai Colony," aired March 27, 2026, and closes on it (Wikipedia, Season 3).
That is as far as the anime goes. Season 3 stopped around chapter 181, and everything below is manga only (Screen Rant).
What happens to Yuta at the end of Jujutsu Kaisen?
He survives the last battle and stands with the other survivors in chapter 271, and in the Modulo spin-off, set in 2086, his grandchildren are the main characters (CBR, Wikipedia, Modulo). The steps in between are manga-only, so each one sits in a reveal below.

In chapter 243, the comedian Fumihiko Takaba keeps Kenjaku busy with a comedy duel, and Yuta attacks from behind and beheads him (Wikipedia, Yuta Okkotsu, Wikipedia, characters). Kenjaku was wearing the body of Suguru Geto, the man Yuta fought in Jujutsu Kaisen 0.
Then comes the fight with Sukuna, after Sukuna has killed Gojo. Yuta's last resort is told in full in our Shinjuku Showdown story, on the beat where Yuta moves into Gojo's body.
Spoiler (manga): the last resort Yuta takes against Sukuna
Yuta had copied Kenjaku's brain-transplant technique through Rika. Near death, he moves into Gojo's body, which Shoko had "stitched up properly", and Gojo had agreed in advance to his body being used this way (Game Rant). Chapter 260 ends on what Sukuna takes for Gojo's ghost; chapter 261 shows Gojo's body walking back onto the battlefield and reveals that it is Yuta (Dexerto). The copy lasts five minutes while Rika is fully manifested, and in that body Yuta can use Limitless, the Six Eyes and Hollow Purple. Gojo is not resurrected: Yuta only uses his corpse, "to aid Yuji in fighting and defeating Sukuna" (Wikipedia, Satoru Gojo). Yuta's own Domain Expansion, Authentic Mutual Love, is first shown in chapter 249, against Sukuna (Wikipedia, Yuta Okkotsu).

Rika returns Yuta to his own body, and he is back in it by the final chapters (Wikipedia, Yuta Okkotsu, Screen Rant). Chapter 271, "From Now On", shows him in the final pages with Yuji, Megumi, Nobara, Maki, Panda, Hakari and Kirara (CBR). He becomes the head representative of the Gojo clan (Wikipedia, Yuta Okkotsu).
Our reading of the whole arc: the boy who could not let one person go becomes the one who carries out his teacher's wishes after his teacher is gone. The ring is the thread between the two halves.
Modulo answers the last question people ask about him. As an old man Yuta promises his granddaughter Yuka his cursed ring, and Modulo's first chapter confirms he has died by 2086 (Wikipedia, Yuta Okkotsu, Game Rant). No cause is stated; Game Rant frames it as heartbreak after Maki's death, which is their reading rather than canon.
