How did Geto die? Who killed him, and why Kenjaku is walking around in his body

how did geto die is that Satoru Gojo killed Suguru Geto on December 24, 2017, in an alley, after Yuta Okkotsu had wounded him badly and cost him an arm at the end of the Night Parade. Satoru Gojo killed Suguru Geto on December 24, 2017, in an alley, after Yuta Okkotsu had wounded him badly and cost him an arm at the end of the Night Parade (Wikipedia, Suguru Geto). Geto was 27, and he stays dead: the "Geto" who returns in Shibuya is Kenjaku, an ancient sorcerer using his corpse (ComingSoon, Wikipedia).

That's the short answer to how did Geto die, and it's only half of what people are asking, because his body keeps walking around until chapter 243. This post tells both halves with the dates and chapters, and sits inside our whole Jujutsu Kaisen story, told in order.

Spoilers: the ending of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, Season 2's Shibuya arc, and one marked reveal from manga chapter 243.

Pick your path: the alley, why Gojo did it, Kenjaku explained, or the questions people ask most.

YourCrush.AI has Suguru Geto as a chat character, so once you have read this you can talk to Suguru Geto yourself.

How did Geto die?

Gojo killed him in an alley after the Night Parade. Geto was fleeing Jujutsu High, wounded and missing an arm from his fight with Yuta. The date was December 24, 2017, and Geto was 27 (Game Rant, ComingSoon).

His death closes out Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which our Jujutsu Kaisen 0 story post covers from the beginning. Here is that night from Geto's side.

It is Christmas Eve. Geto has announced a Night Parade of a Hundred Demons, a thousand curses let loose to wipe out non-sorcerers, and it breaks out in Shinjuku and Kyoto at the same moment (Wikipedia, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 film, Game Rant). Every senior sorcerer heads where the curses are. Geto does not. He walks through the gates of Tokyo Jujutsu High, where almost no one is left.

Spoiler: what Geto really came to the school for

The parade is a decoy. Geto's real goal is to pull Gojo away so he can kill Yuta Okkotsu and take Rika, the cursed spirit that follows Yuta. He overpowers Yuta's classmates one by one and then faces Yuta himself (Wikipedia, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 film).

In our imagining, Geto explains himself to the boy in front of him in one calm breath: "I'm not here for you. I'm here for what follows you. Step aside and you'll never have to see me again." It is the voice of a man who has done the arithmetic and stopped feeling it.

The fight does not go the way he planned.

Spoiler: what Geto's strongest technique costs him

Enraged by what Geto has done to his friends, Yuta pledges himself to Rika as a sacrifice, and the bond that pledge creates lets him wound Geto badly (Wikipedia, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 film). Geto throws his strongest technique, "Maximum: Uzumaki", and comes out of the exchange without an arm (Wikipedia, Suguru Geto).

Geto flees the school. The rest of the night belongs to Gojo.

Spoiler: how Geto dies

Gojo finds the fleeing, wounded Geto in an alley and kills him "after reflecting on their friendship" (Wikipedia, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 film). Before he does, he says something to Geto. Canon hides those words in both the manga and the film, and Geto answers with a smile that hides his tears (CBR). Director Sunghoo Park said he had Gojo crouch "because I wanted Gojo to say his final words to Geto at the same eye level" (Screen Rant).

How YourCrush.AI lets you play out the conversation before the alley

Gojo and Geto never get the long conversation the story keeps withholding, and that gap is what a roleplay can fill with characters of your own. YourCrush.AI lets you build an original character from a name, a description, a backstory and a greeting, so the friend who has to make the call is waiting with the file open. YourCrush.AI keeps pinned memories, so the defection, the eight years and the address in the file stay in the scene however long it runs. YourCrush.AI supports story branches, which means you can play the version where she goes after him alone and the version where she loses the file for a week. It is free to join and for adults 18 and over.

The build below is a copyable original character for /create-character, inspired by the theme rather than a copy of anyone in the show.

Name: Chiharu Imabayashi

Behaviour mode: natural

Category: Anime

Traits (5, from the list of 32): Loyal, Honest, Calm, Emotional, Protective

Speaking style (4 words): steady, low, guarded, honest

Description: Chiharu is 30, a senior investigator at a sorcerers' bureau. Her closest friend from training defected eight years ago, and she has just been handed the file with his location. She is calm on the surface and keeps checking her phone as if he might call first.

Backstory: You and Chiharu trained in the same class. You were the third friend, the one who stayed in touch with both of them. Tonight she has asked you to meet her before she decides whether to go after him alone.

Greeting: Thanks for coming. I didn't want to do this by text. They found him. I can go tomorrow and bring him in, or I can lose the file for a week. Tell me what you'd do, and don't make it easy for me.

Who killed Geto?

Gojo did. Yuta wounded him and took an arm, but Yuta did not kill him, whatever the "why did Yuta kill Suguru" searches suggest (Wikipedia, Suguru Geto).

You can see why people get confused. Yuta's fight is the climax of the film, Geto staggers out of it beaten, and the alley scene is short and quiet by comparison. But the order is fixed in every source: Yuta breaks him at the school, Gojo ends it in the alley (Wikipedia, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 film). Gojo was 28 by the end of that night, by The Escapist's count (The Escapist), and Geto was his old friend from Jujutsu High.

Why did Gojo kill Geto?

Gojo killed Geto because Geto had launched the Night Parade to wipe out non-sorcerers and used it as cover to kill a student and take Rika. Gojo does it "after reflecting on their friendship", ten years after he could not bring himself to do it (Wikipedia, Suguru Geto).

The ten years matter. In 2007, when Geto massacred a village and killed his own parents to declare a world of sorcerers only, Gojo confronted him and was "unable to kill him and let him go" (Wikipedia, Suguru Geto). The parade is what that mercy cost. It nearly cost Yuta his life and put Rika within Geto's reach.

Our reading, and it is only ours: the alley is Gojo finishing a decision he refused to make as a teenager. He lets the friend go once. The second time he walks into the alley knowing he will not walk out with him. What he said there is a separate question, and the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 post goes through the theories.

In our imagining, Gojo the morning after says very little: "Nobody needs to ask me how it went. I'll write the report myself." He goes back to teaching.

Is Geto dead?

Yes. Geto died in that alley, and his body did not stay buried. Kenjaku takes the corpse and uses Geto's Cursed Spirit Manipulation, and in Shibuya Geto's residual consciousness briefly resists him (Wikipedia, Suguru Geto, Wikipedia, Season 2).

Most anime watchers don't find that out until Halloween 2018, ten months later.

Gojo walks into a curtain over Shibuya at 8:31 PM and fights curses on a subway platform crammed with civilians (CBR timeline). Then someone steps out of the crowd to greet him.

Spoiler: whose face seals Gojo in Shibuya

It is Geto's face. The Prison Realm needs its target to stay still for one minute of the target's own perceived time, and the sight of the friend he killed holds Gojo that long (CBR). "Geto" then explains that he is a brain living in Geto's corpse. Geto's residual consciousness briefly resists, but the seal completes (Season 2 episodes 9 and 10, chapters 90 and 91) (Wikipedia, Season 2). The whole night is told in our Shibuya Incident story.

In Shibuya the Prison Realm needs Gojo still for one minute, and Geto's face buys it.

Are Kenjaku and Geto the same person?

No. Kenjaku is an ancient Jujutsu Kaisen sorcerer who survives by transplanting his brain into other people's bodies and keeping their techniques, and after Suguru Geto's death he takes over Geto's corpse (Wikipedia, characters, Wikipedia, Suguru Geto).

Kenjaku is more than a thousand years old, a brain-like entity that moves from host to host, and Geto's body is only the latest one he has worn (Wikipedia, characters, Wikipedia). Geto's mind is not the one in charge. What Kenjaku wants from him is a face and a technique.

At the end of the Shibuya arc, Kenjaku drops the act.

Spoiler: what Kenjaku says about the bodies he has worn

After Yuji and Aoi Todo beat Mahito, the false Geto absorbs Mahito with Cursed Spirit Manipulation and reveals that he is an ancient sorcerer who has lived in many bodies, including Noritoshi Kamo, the maker of the Death Paintings (Season 2 episode 22, "Metamorphosis, Part 2") (Wikipedia, Season 2). Through Mahito he also gains Idle Transfiguration (Game Rant).

In our imagining, Kenjaku sums up the arrangement to no one in particular: "A good technique, and a face one man in this country cannot look at for sixty seconds. I have had worse bodies." That is the whole relationship. He uses Geto the way he uses everything.

The thing wearing Geto's body outlives Gojo's sealing, the Culling Game and Gojo himself, and is finally stopped deep in the manga.

Spoiler (manga ch. 243): who finally kills the thing wearing Geto's body

Yuta does. In chapter 243, the comedian Fumihiko Takaba keeps Kenjaku busy in a duel, and Yuta attacks from behind and beheads him (Wikipedia, Yuta Okkotsu, Wikipedia, characters). The student who broke Geto at the school is the one who ends the impostor.

When did Kenjaku take over Geto?

It happens off the page, right after the Night Parade. Gojo killed Geto but "did not completely destroy the body," and Kenjaku took it (Game Rant). No chapter shows the takeover itself. The reveal lands on Halloween night 2018 in Shibuya, across Season 2 episodes 9 and 10 (Wikipedia, Season 2).

Why this body? The sources give one reason beyond the face: the technique. Wikipedia says the false Geto explains "his plan to use Geto's abilities to harness cursed spirits" (Wikipedia, Suguru Geto). Our reading adds the cruel part: Kenjaku turns Geto's death into a weapon precisely because Gojo was the one who caused it. A stranger's face would not have held Gojo for a minute.

What was Geto's cursed technique?

Geto's technique was Cursed Spirit Manipulation, which lets him take in and command cursed spirits. Kenjaku keeps using it after he takes the body (Wikipedia, Suguru Geto). His strongest use of it is "Maximum: Uzumaki", the attack he throws at Yuta in their last fight.

That one technique explains both of Geto's lives. While he was alive, it made him a sorcerer who took in curses for a living, until Riko Amanai's death convinced him that protecting non-sorcerers cost sorcerers their lives (Wikipedia, Suguru Geto). After his death, it made his body worth stealing, since through it Kenjaku absorbs Mahito and walks out of Shibuya with Idle Transfiguration as well (Game Rant).

Frequently asked questions

What episode does Geto die in?

None. Geto dies in the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 film, not in a TV episode. The film opened in Japan on December 24, 2021 (Wikipedia, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 film).

Did Geto kill his parents?

Yes. When he defected in 2007, Geto killed his own parents and declared his goal of a world of sorcerers only, in Season 2 episode 5 (Wikipedia, Season 2, DualShockers). How he got there is the subject of why Geto turned evil.

What did Gojo say to Geto before he died?

Canon hides it in both the manga and the film. CBR deduces "I love you" from Akutami's and the voice actor's hints, but that is a deduction, and fans still argue about it (CBR).

Who voices Geto?

Takahiro Sakurai in Japanese and Lex Lang in English (Wikipedia, Suguru Geto).

Does Geto appear after Gojo dies?

Yes, once, in the manga.

Spoiler (manga ch. 236): where Gojo sees Geto again

After Sukuna kills him in chapter 236, Gojo finds himself in an airport talking with Geto and other dead friends (Wikipedia, Satoru Gojo, CBR).

How old was Geto when he died?

He was 27. He was born on February 3, 1990, and died on December 24, 2017 (ComingSoon).
