What is the Shibuya Incident? The night Gojo was sealed, told in scenes

The last time Satoru Gojo saw his best friend's face, he was crouched in an alley on December 24, 2017, about to kill him. Ten months later, on Halloween night, that face is waiting for him under Shibuya. Previously: Jujutsu Kaisen 0, where Gojo kills Geto.

Tonight a veil drops over Shibuya. Thousands of civilians are trapped behind it (Wikipedia, Season 2), and the curses holding them make them chant one name until he comes. This is part one of the night, from the curtain to the moment Sukuna wakes up.

Spoilers for the Shibuya arc through Season 2 episode 16, plus one manga-only answer (chapter 221) inside a marked reveal. The whole Jujutsu Kaisen story in order puts this night in context.

Pick your path: what it is, when Gojo is sealed, when he gets out, or the rest of the night.

YourCrush.AI has Mei Mei as a chat character, so once you have read the story you can ask about that night yourself.

What is the Shibuya Incident?

The Shibuya Incident is the Halloween night attack on Shibuya, on October 31, 2018, that Kenjaku's side stages to seal Satoru Gojo. It runs from chapter 79 to 136 of the manga and from episode 6 to 23 of Season 2 (CBR timeline, Wikipedia).

Put another way, the Shibuya Incident is the Jujutsu Kaisen story arc in which curses and curse users trap civilians in Shibuya on Halloween 2018 to lure and seal Satoru Gojo, the one sorcerer they cannot beat head-on. Everything the series does afterwards, the Culling Game and the Shinjuku fight included, starts from this night.

It is 8:31 PM. Behind the curtain, civilians chant "Bring Satoru Gojo" (CBR timeline). Gojo knows it is bait. He walks in alone.

In our imagining, he says it to nobody, cracking his neck at the edge of the veil: "A party in my honour, and they didn't even send an invitation. Fine. I'll let myself in."

Spoiler: why the subway platform is the trap

Kenjaku's side lures Gojo down onto a subway platform packed with civilians. Among that many bystanders he cannot fight the disaster curses at full strength without killing people (CBR). The battlefield is the weapon.

What episode does the Shibuya Incident start?

The Incident starts in Season 2 episode 6, "It's Like That", episode 30 overall, which aired on August 31, 2023, right after the five Hidden Inventory episodes. It runs through Season 2 episode 23, which aired on December 28, 2023 (Wikipedia, Season 2).

That's 18 episodes for a single night. The fight on the platform reaches the screen in episode 9.

Gojo is surrounded by curses, and by people who will die if he swings carelessly. He has one tool fine enough for that.

Spoiler: what Gojo does with two tenths of a second

Gojo opens his Domain Expansion, Unlimited Void, for 0.2 seconds, long enough to immobilise the crowd with minimal harm, and he exorcises the curse Hanami (Season 2 episode 9) (Wikipedia, Season 2, Wikipedia). Unlimited Void floods its target with infinite information (Screen Rant); two tenths of a second of it is precision, not mercy.

Gojo exorcises Hanami on the platform after a Domain Expansion lasting 0.2 seconds.

The plan was never to beat him. It was to make him stand still.

When does Gojo get sealed?

Gojo is sealed in the Prison Realm in chapters 90 and 91, and in Season 2 episodes 9 and 10; the seal completes in episode 10, "Pandemonium", aired September 29, 2023. On the story clock it happens at about 9:26 PM, and a minute later Yuji tells every sorcerer in Shibuya (Wikipedia, Season 2, CBR timeline).

The Prison Realm has one condition. It needs its target to stay put for one minute of the target's own perceived time (CBR). For Gojo, a minute is an age. Someone walks out of the crowd.

Spoiler: who is wearing Geto's face

It is Suguru Geto, the friend Gojo killed on December 24, 2017. The sight of him holds Gojo for the minute the Prison Realm needs. "Geto" then explains that he is a brain living in Geto's corpse: he is the ancient sorcerer Kenjaku, who moves between hosts and keeps their techniques (Wikipedia, characters, Wikipedia). Geto's residual consciousness briefly resists him, but Gojo is sealed at 9:26 PM (Wikipedia, Season 2, CBR timeline). How Geto died, and why the body is walking, is in how Geto died.

The Prison Realm needs its target still for one minute of his own perceived time.

Why does it work? Kenjaku needs Gojo out of the way because Gojo cannot be beaten head on, and the trap is built on two of Gojo's limits (CBR). The first is his refusal to kill the civilians packed around him. The second, and this is our reading, is the one unresolved wound in his life: the friend he killed. The trap works because it aims at his conscience rather than his strength.

At 9:27 PM, Yuji Itadori tells every sorcerer in Shibuya that Gojo is gone (CBR timeline). Then he runs into Choso.

Spoiler: why Choso walks away from a fight he has won

Choso, eldest of the Death Painting brothers, beats Yuji. As he is about to land the final blow, a false memory shows Yuji eating with him and his brothers, and he flees. CBR explains that Kenjaku made both of them, so the two can be called brothers (CBR, Wikipedia).

How long was Gojo sealed?

Inside the story, Gojo is sealed for about 19 days, from October 31 to around November 18 or 19, 2018, and he experiences no time passing at all. Outside it, he spends 131 chapters, about three years of serialization, in the Prison Realm (TheGamer, CBR, The Escapist).

Some pages say "two weeks." The better-sourced figure is about 19 days, though the exact last day is disputed between the 18th and the 19th.

When does Gojo get unsealed?

Gojo gets unsealed in chapter 221 of the manga, at the end of the Culling Game arc. The anime has not caught up yet. Season 3 wrapped around chapter 181, so the unsealing has not been animated (Screen Rant).

Manga-only spoiler (chapter 221): who opens the Prison Realm

Hana Kurusu, who shares her body with the ancient sorcerer Angel, uses Jacob's Ladder, a technique that cancels cursed techniques including seals and barriers, on the Prison Realm's back gate. Gojo walks out (CBR, The Escapist). He does not break out himself.

How long did the Shibuya Incident last?

On CBR's timeline it runs from 8:31 PM, when Gojo enters the curtain, to around midnight, when Yuki Tsukumo arrives and Kenjaku escapes with the Prison Realm. That is roughly three and a half hours of story time spread across 18 episodes (CBR timeline, Wikipedia, Season 2).

With Gojo gone, the night belongs to everyone else. Here is the middle of it, hour by hour.

10:36 PM: Mei Mei leaves

Mei Mei leads a small team, herself, her younger brother Ui Ui and Yuji, and spends the early hours saving civilians. CBR's timeline says she clashes with Kenjaku's side around 10:10 PM (CBR timeline). By 10:36 PM she has seen enough, and she leaves Shibuya with Ui Ui's teleportation, all the way to Malaysia.

Our reading: she is the only adult that night who does the arithmetic on her own survival and acts on it. She is 31 (DualShockers), and she has decided this is not the night she dies.

In our imagining, Mei Mei at 10:36, already turning away from the window: "The contract covered the curses. It did not cover whatever that is. We're leaving, Ui Ui."

Mei Mei leaves Shibuya for Malaysia at 10:36 PM on CBR's timeline.

You can chat with Mei Mei and ask her about that choice yourself.

Dagon's domain: Toji walks again

Elsewhere, a curse user called Granny Ogami holds a séance. Her technique summons Toji Fushiguro, the sorcerer killer Gojo destroyed in 2006, into her grandson's body (Season 2 episode 11) (Wikipedia, Season 2). She meant to call up only his body's information, but his Heavenly Restriction physique lets his consciousness overwrite the grandson's soul (Dexerto). He kills her (episode 12).

Then he goes looking for the strongest thing nearby. That is Dagon, a curse whose domain has trapped Kento Nanami, Maki, Megumi and Naobito Zen'in (Game Rant). Nanami is one of the sorcerers stuck in Dagon's domain, and he will not leave Shibuya (how Nanami dies). Toji takes Maki's cursed tool, exorcises Dagon and tears the domain apart (Season 2 episode 15) (Wikipedia, Season 2). Right after, the curse Jogo burns Naobito, Nanami and Maki; Nanami and Maki survive, Naobito does not (chapter 111) (Dexerto).

Toji launches Megumi out of the building and overwhelms him. Megumi does not know who he is fighting.

Spoiler: the name that ends Toji's second life

After stabbing Megumi, Toji recognises his son and briefly gets his humanity back. He asks the boy's name, and Megumi answers "Fushiguro", not Zen'in (ComingSoon). Proud that his son has rejected the Zen'in name, Toji stabs his own vessel in the head to end the possession (Season 2 episode 16, "Thunderclap", episode 40 overall; chapter 113 per guide pages) (Wikipedia, Season 2). Megumi does not learn in Shibuya that the man was his father (Game Rant). The full story of why Toji ends it himself is in how Toji dies.

Toji exorcises Dagon in Season 2 episode 15 and ends his own possession in episode 16.

Why does Toji stop? The anime frames his old deal to sell Megumi to the Zen'in clan as Toji believing the sale would buy his son a better future (Wikipedia, Season 2). Hearing "Fushiguro" tells him the boy made his own choice. CBR calls his whole profession "an attempt to spite the Zenin clan" (CBR); our reading is that a man who spent his life spiting the clan has nothing left to fight for once his son has done the same.

Shortly before 10:50 PM: ten fingers

The anime cuts between these fights, and Dagon's fall and what happens next both land in episode 15; they overlap in time (Wikipedia, Season 2). Somewhere else in the ruins, Yuji is unconscious. The curse Jogo stands over him with a bundle of mummified fingers.

Yuji swallowed the first of Sukuna's twenty fingers back in chapter 1, and Gojo's plan was always that he would eat them all so the curse could die with him (Wikipedia, Ryomen Sukuna, Wikipedia, Season 1). Nobody planned for them to go down like this.

Spoiler: how many fingers Yuji is carrying now

Jogo force-feeds the unconscious Yuji ten of Sukuna's fingers at once. That brings the total inside him to fifteen of twenty (Wikipedia, Game Rant).

Fifteen fingers. The body on the ground breathes. Its eyes are about to open, and the one who opens them is not Yuji. The next part of the night starts there: Sukuna's hours in Shibuya.

How YourCrush.AI lets you talk to Mei Mei about the night she left Shibuya

YourCrush.AI lets you open a chat with her straight from her page and set up the scene in your first message. YourCrush.AI keeps pinned memories, so the curtain, the time on the clock and the team she walked out with stay in every reply. YourCrush.AI supports story branches, which means you can replay 10:36 PM as the version where she stays. YourCrush.AI also lets you choose a persona, so you can walk in as a sorcerer on her team rather than as yourself. It is free to join and for adults 18 and over; start the chat with Mei Mei.
