why does gojo cover his eyes is because prolonged use of his Six Eyes wears him down, and a blindfold or sunglasses cuts the strain, though the covering doesn't stop him from seeing cursed energy. Gojo covers his eyes because prolonged use of his Six Eyes wears him down, and a blindfold or a pair of sunglasses cuts the strain (Game Rant, Screen Rant). The covering doesn't stop him from seeing cursed energy. That's the whole point of the design Gege Akutami started from: a blindfold Gojo can see straight through (Wikipedia, Satoru Gojo).
Most answers online to why does Gojo cover his eyes blur three things together: the in-story reason, the author's reason for the design, and the parts nobody has actually established. This post keeps them apart. For the story his eyes belong to, see the whole Jujutsu Kaisen story in order.
Spoilers: light. Scenes from Season 1 and Season 2 sit in reveals, and one FAQ answer touches the manga's final arc.

YourCrush.AI has Gojo Satoru as a chat character, so once you have read this you can talk to Gojo Satoru yourself.
Why does Gojo cover his eyes?
Prolonged use of the Six Eyes tires the user, so Gojo covers his eyes with a blindfold or sunglasses to reduce the strain. Covering them does not stop him from seeing cursed energy (Game Rant, Screen Rant).
Screen Rant quotes Akutami on the point: "being blindfolded or bespectacled doesn't hinder" the Six Eyes (Screen Rant). The cloth is a way of managing fatigue. It is not a handicap he fights through.
How YourCrush.AI lets you talk to someone who sees more than she says
The blindfold is shorthand for a person who perceives more than everyone around them and has to turn it down to function, and that is a character you can build as an original adult. YourCrush.AI lets you write her description, backstory and greeting, so she is already looking at your heirloom when the chat opens. YourCrush.AI keeps pinned memories, so the grandmother, the forty years and whatever she saw stay in every reply. YourCrush.AI supports in-chat image generation and story branches, which means you can picture the shop and try the conversation where you refuse to answer her. It is free to join and for adults 18 and over.
The build below is a copyable original character for /create-character, inspired by the theme rather than a copy of Gojo.
Name: Cassia Morimoto
Behaviour mode: natural
Category: Anime
Traits (5, from the list of 32): Mysterious, Intelligent, Calm, Sarcastic, Curious
Speaking style (4 words): low, precise, amused, unhurried
Description: Cassia is 33, an antiques appraiser who wears dark tinted glasses indoors. When she takes them off she sees the history of whatever she looks at, every hand that held it, and it gives her a headache by noon. She is dry, observant, and enjoys being right a little too much.
Backstory: Cassia has had the sight since she was a child and learned to live with it by covering her eyes. You brought a family heirloom to her shop to be valued, and she took her glasses off to look at it, which she almost never does for a stranger.
Greeting: Put it on the felt, please, not the glass. Hm. Before I tell you what it's worth, tell me why your grandmother kept it hidden for forty years. No, I'm not guessing. I'll explain the glasses once you've answered.
What are Gojo's Six Eyes?
The Six Eyes are an inherited trait of Jujutsu Kaisen's Gojo clan. They give the user extremely precise perception and control of cursed energy, with almost no waste (Game Rant). Satoru was the first person in about 400 years born with both the Six Eyes and the clan's Limitless technique (Wikipedia, Satoru Gojo).
Physically, they show up as a pair of bright blue eyes. Game Rant describes the trait as manifesting "as bright blue eyes within certain members of the Gojo Family" (Game Rant). What makes them so draining is the same thing that makes them so strong. They take in cursed energy at a level of detail that wears the user down if they stay active all day.
Can Gojo see through his blindfold?
Yes. Akutami has said the key idea behind Gojo's design was "a blindfold he could see through due to his supernatural powers" (Wikipedia, Satoru Gojo).
That line explains why the blindfold came first and the lore came second. The image of a man who walks around blindfolded and still sees more than anyone in the room was the starting point. The Six Eyes' fatigue is the in-story reason that makes it hold together.
Picture Gojo answering a student who asks: "Can I see through it? I can see that you skipped the reading, so, yes."
Why does Gojo wear sunglasses sometimes?
He wears sunglasses mainly as a teenager. In the Hidden Inventory flashback of 2006 his Six Eyes were "far from perfect", so the strain was smaller, and Akutami used the dark glasses to set the younger Gojo apart and keep his eyes more visible (Game Rant).
By adulthood, the blindfold takes over. Both coverings do the same job, blocking the constant input that wears him down, and Akutami has said neither one hinders the Six Eyes (Screen Rant). Twelve years separate the two looks. Gojo is 16 in Hidden Inventory and 28 in the main story, as our Gojo age guide lays out (The Escapist).
What happens if Gojo doesn't cover his eyes?
He gets tired. Running the Six Eyes for long stretches wears the user down (Game Rant). The story puts a number on that cost in 2006, when the teenage Gojo keeps them going non-stop to guard Riko Amanai and Geto worries about how exhausted he is (Wikipedia, Season 2).
In Okinawa, Geto watches Gojo run the Six Eyes with no rest at all, and that is where the answer plays out on screen, in our Hidden Inventory story. Both of them are teenagers here, so the scene is told as plot only.
Spoiler: what the Six Eyes cost Gojo on the Riko job
Gojo and Geto are second-years assigned to protect Riko Amanai, who is to merge with Master Tengen, and the assassin Toji Fushiguro has posted a bounty on her so that other hunters wear Gojo down first. The trio waits out the bounty on Okinawa, and Geto watches Gojo keep the Six Eyes running with no rest at all (Season 2 episodes 2 and 3) (Wikipedia, Season 2).
The bounty does what Toji wanted.
Spoiler: what happens when Gojo's guard finally drops
Back in Tokyo, Toji ambushes them. Gojo realizes Toji has no cursed energy at all but enormous physical ability, and with a special cursed tool Toji apparently kills him. Gojo survives by activating Reverse Cursed Technique, comes back, and uses Hollow Purple (Wikipedia, Season 2). The whole arc is in the Hidden Inventory post linked above.
Our reading: the ambush is what tiredness costs a person who sees everything. The fatigue the blindfold manages is the opening Toji set out to create.
Is Gojo stronger without his blindfold?
The sources do not say so. They say the covering reduces strain and does not stop him seeing cursed energy, and none describes a power boost from taking it off (Screen Rant).
What the anime does show is a habit: Gojo takes the blindfold off when he gets serious, as in the fight with Jogo in Season 1 episode 7 and near the end of the Exchange Event arc in episode 20, per Epicstream (Epicstream). That reads as a signal to the audience, not a stated rule about power.
Spoiler: the first time the anime shows Infinity and Unlimited Void
In Season 1 episodes 6 and 7, "After Rain" and "Assault", Gojo takes on the curse Jogo and shows off his Infinity and his Domain Expansion, Unlimited Void (Wikipedia, Season 1).

In our imagining, adult Gojo before a fight, tugging the cloth down: "Fine. I'll look properly. Don't take it personally."
Why can't you touch Gojo?
Because of Infinity, the neutral form of his Limitless technique, which manipulates space so that a blow never reaches him. In Screen Rant's description, "the blow ends up hitting infinity itself" (Screen Rant).
Infinity comes from Limitless, not from the Six Eyes, though both are Gojo-clan inheritances (Game Rant). The two work together: the Six Eyes give him the precision, and Limitless is the technique that precision runs.
The clearest example of the pair working at once is Halloween 2018.
Spoiler: the 0.2 seconds in Shibuya
On a subway platform packed with civilians in Shibuya, Gojo cannot fight at full strength without killing bystanders, so he opens Unlimited Void for 0.2 seconds to immobilise the crowd with minimal harm (Season 2 episode 9) (Wikipedia, Season 2, CBR). Control that fine is what the Six Eyes are for. The rest of that night is in our Shibuya Incident story.

Frequently asked questions
Is Gojo blind?
No. The blindfold does not stop him from seeing cursed energy. It only reduces the strain of the Six Eyes (Screen Rant).
What is Gojo's Limitless?
It is the Gojo family's inherited technique, and it manipulates space. Blue attracts, Red repels, and Hollow Purple combines the two (Screen Rant).
What is Unlimited Void?
Gojo's Domain Expansion. It floods the target with infinite information and leaves them unable to act (Screen Rant).
What colour are Gojo's eyes?
Bright blue. Game Rant describes the Six Eyes as showing up as bright blue eyes in certain members of the Gojo family (Game Rant).
How rare are the Six Eyes and Limitless together?
Very. Gojo was the first in about 400 years born with both (Wikipedia, Satoru Gojo).
Does anyone else ever use the Six Eyes?
Yes, once, in the manga's final arc.
Spoiler (manga): who else uses the Six Eyes
In the Shinjuku Showdown, Yuta Okkotsu moves into Gojo's body after Gojo's death, and while he is in it he can use Limitless, the Six Eyes and Hollow Purple (Game Rant).
