What happens in JJK's Hidden Inventory arc? The full story of the job that went wrong

The Hidden Inventory arc is the 2006 flashback that opens Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2. Students Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto are ordered to protect 14-year-old Riko Amanai, and they lose her to the assassin Toji Fushiguro (Wikipedia, Season 2). It runs five episodes with Premature Death, chapters 65 to 78 of the manga, and it is where Gojo becomes the strongest and Geto starts to break (Wikipedia, chapter list).

If you have only seen Season 1, this is the story of how its teacher became who he is.

Spoilers: Hidden Inventory, chapters 65 to 75 and Season 2 episodes 1 to 4. The Premature Death episode is left for part two.

Pick your path: the story in scenes, how many episodes it is, when it takes place, or the movie.

YourCrush.AI has Toji Fushiguro as a chat character, so once you have read this you can talk to Toji Fushiguro yourself.

What is the Hidden Inventory arc in JJK?

It is the flashback to Gojo and Geto's student days that opens Season 2: the two are assigned to protect Riko Amanai, the "Star Plasma Vessel" that Master Tengen needs for his immortality technique. Two groups want her dead, and one of them hires Toji Fushiguro (Wikipedia, Season 2).

The Hidden Inventory arc is a flashback in Jujutsu Kaisen, chapters 65 to 75 of the manga and the opening episodes of the anime's Season 2, set in 2006, in which students Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto guard a girl whom an assassin has been paid to kill. The two groups are the curse-user group "Q" and the Time Vessel Association, a religious group that opposes Riko's merger with Tengen; the Association is the one that pays Toji (Wikipedia, Season 2).

What happens in the Hidden Inventory arc?

Gojo and Geto keep Riko alive against a bounty, then lose her to Toji in Tengen's own lair, and Gojo comes back from apparent death stronger than anyone alive. What follows is the arc in six scenes, with every turn behind a reveal.

The assignment

It is 2006, and the second-years at Tokyo Jujutsu High are the kind of students teachers send on the jobs nobody else can do. Gojo, Geto and Shoko Ieiri have just pulled two sorcerers, Utahime Iori and Mei Mei, out of a cursed house (Wikipedia, Season 2). The next assignment is different. It is a person.

Spoiler: who Riko is and why Tengen needs her

Gojo and Geto are assigned to protect 14-year-old Riko Amanai. She is the Star Plasma Vessel that Master Tengen needs to merge with for his immortality technique. The curse-user group Q and the Time Vessel Association both want her dead, and the Association hires the assassin Toji Fushiguro (chapters 65 to 66, episode 1 "Hidden Inventory"; Wikipedia, Season 2).

The job is simple on paper: deliver a girl to the place where she stops being herself. Nobody in the briefing asks her what she wants. That silence is the arc's first crack.

The bounty and Okinawa

Gojo and Geto beat Q quickly and meet Riko and her caretaker, Misato Kuroi. Tengen orders that Riko be allowed a normal day before her assimilation (Wikipedia, Season 2).

Our imagining of Kuroi on that morning, an adult who knows exactly what the day is for: "Eat the whole breakfast. I made too much on purpose. Today you get to be late for something."

Spoiler: how Toji gets other hunters to do his work

Toji posts a bounty on Riko, so that every other hunter in Japan wears Gojo down before Toji has to lift a finger. Kuroi is kidnapped. The three rescue her in Okinawa and stay on the island until the bounty expires. Geto, watching, worries about how tired Gojo is from running his Six Eyes without a break (chapters 67 to 72, episodes 2 and 3; Wikipedia, Season 2).

Misato Kuroi is Riko Amanai's caretaker, and Tengen grants Riko a normal day before the merger.

Toji's plan is the cheapest one available. Here is how we imagine him explaining it, to nobody in particular: "Why fight the kid with the eyes when the whole country will tire him out for me? I just have to show up last."

In episode 3 the group stays in Okinawa until the bounty on Riko expires.

The days in Okinawa are the last easy ones Gojo and Geto get together. The cost of those days, as Geto sees it, is in his friend's eyes.

The ambush

They come back to Tokyo with the bounty expired. Gojo has been running the Six Eyes for days. Then a man with no cursed energy at all is waiting for them.

Spoiler: what Toji does to Gojo, and then to Riko

Gojo realizes that Toji has no cursed energy but enormous physical ability. Using a special cursed tool, Toji apparently kills Gojo. He then fatally shoots Riko in Tengen's lair. The volume 9 summary says Riko had changed her mind about the merger and wanted to live (chapters 70 to 72, episode 3; Wikipedia, Season 2; Wikipedia, chapter list).

How does he get that close? Toji keeps a contract with a low-level Inventory Curse that stores his cursed tools in its mouth, and because it hides even traces of cursed energy, he can slip past barriers (Dexerto). A sorcerer who senses cursed energy has nothing to sense.

Geto vs Toji

With Riko dead, Geto is the one left facing Toji. He fights with the curses he controls, against a man who is, by every measure sorcerers use, nobody.

Spoiler: who wins when Geto fights Toji

Geto fights Toji and is beaten. Toji delivers Riko's body to his employers and collects his payment (chapters 73 to 75, episode 4; Wikipedia, Season 2).

For Toji, this is a delivery. The Time Vessel Association pays, and CBR describes his whole profession as an attempt to spite the Zen'in clan he was born into (CBR). The man who beat both of Jujutsu High's star students did it for a fee and a grudge.

Gojo comes back

Somewhere in Tokyo, Gojo is lying where Toji left him, and he is not dead.

Spoiler: how Gojo survives, and what Toji tells him before he dies

Gojo survives by activating his Reverse Cursed Technique. He comes back, finds Toji, and uses Hollow Purple, which destroys Toji's left side (chapter 75, episode 4; Wikipedia, Season 2). Sportskeeda's episode 4 review identifies this as the scene of Gojo's line "Throughout Heaven and Earth, I alone am the honored one" (Sportskeeda).

Before he dies, Toji tells Gojo that his son, Megumi, will be sold to the Zen'in clan (Wikipedia, Season 2). Game Rant paraphrases it as telling Gojo "to do whatever he wanted with that information" (Game Rant).

Our imagining of Toji's last minute, in his voice, in our own words: "There's a kid. Zen'in are buying him. Do what you like with that, I'm done caring about things." He says he does not care, and then he spends his last breath on it.

The applause

The job is over and nothing is left to protect. Gojo picks up Riko's body and walks into the compound of the people who paid for her death.

Spoiler: what Gojo and Geto find inside the compound

Gojo carries Riko's body into the Time Vessel Association's compound, where the members applaud. Geto finds him there (Sportskeeda). Gojo coldly asks whether they should kill the believers. Geto replies that revenge needs a purpose (episode 4; Wikipedia, Season 2).

Adult believers in white robes clapping in a meeting hall, the Time Vessel Association compound
The Time Vessel Association is the religious group that opposes Riko's merger with Tengen and hires Toji.

Why does this scene matter more than the fight? Wikipedia's Geto article traces his later turn to this job: Riko's death convinced him that protecting non-sorcerers cost sorcerers their lives (Wikipedia, Suguru Geto). Our reading: the applause is the image he carries out of the room. The people he was taught to protect are clapping for a dead girl.

Geto talks Gojo out of killing the believers, and for now that is the end of it. One year later, Gojo is strong enough to work alone, and Geto is the one left standing in the applause (Wikipedia, Season 2). Part two picks up that year.

Is the Hidden Inventory arc season 2?

Yes. The jjk hidden inventory arc opens Season 2, which ran from July 6 to December 28, 2023, and the Shibuya Incident takes over from episode 6 (Wikipedia).

The Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 Hidden Inventory arc is also the only stretch of the TV anime in which Gojo is not the adult in the room.

How many episodes is the Hidden Inventory arc?

Five. That's Season 2 episodes 1 through 5, or episodes 25 to 29 if you're counting the series as a whole. Wikipedia files them under the combined title "Hidden Inventory / Premature Death" (Wikipedia, Season 2). The Hidden Inventory chapters (65 to 75) cover roughly the first four episodes, and Premature Death (76 to 78) takes the fifth. I should flag that the per-episode chapter split comes from guide sites, not from any official source.

EpisodeChapters (guide sites)What happens
S2 E1 "Hidden Inventory"65 to 66The assignment
S2 E267 to 69Q, Kuroi, the bounty
S2 E370 to 72Okinawa, the ambush
S2 E473 to 75, part of 76Geto vs Toji, Gojo's return
S2 E5 "Premature Death"76 to 78Part two of the story

Those chapter breakdowns come from Hiptoro and Sportskeeda. All five episodes aired between July 6 and August 3, 2023 (Wikipedia, Season 2).

When does the Hidden Inventory arc take place?

The jjk hidden inventory arc unfolds in 2006, with its Premature Death epilogue landing in 2007. That places it roughly twelve years before Season 1, which is set in 2018 (Wikipedia, Season 2; CBR timeline). Gojo, Geto and Shoko are second-year students at the time.

In story order it is the earliest stretch of the anime, before Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and before Season 1 (CBR). No source I trust pins down the exact month, so I won't invent one.

What is the "hidden inventory" in JJK?

Inside the story, the phrase points to Toji's Inventory Curse, a low-level curse that keeps his cursed tools stashed in its mouth. It conceals even traces of cursed energy, which is how Toji walks straight through barriers that should have stopped him (Dexerto).

Whether the arc's Japanese title actually refers to that curse is a separate question, and I have not found a source that confirms it. Treat the connection between the name and the curse as a fan reading rather than canon.

Who are the main characters in the Hidden Inventory arc?

The jjk hidden inventory arc runs on a small cast: the students Gojo, Geto and Shoko Ieiri, Riko Amanai and her caretaker Misato Kuroi, Master Tengen, and Toji Fushiguro, hired by the Time Vessel Association, with the curse-user group Q as the other threat (Wikipedia, Season 2). Gojo, Geto, Shoko and Riko are all minors here.

CharacterAge in 2006Role
Satoru Gojo16Second-year, Six Eyes and Limitless
Suguru Geto16 (press arithmetic)Second-year, controls curses
Shoko Ieiri17 (press arithmetic)Second-year
Riko Amanai14The Star Plasma Vessel
Misato Kuroi31 (press arithmetic)Riko's caretaker
Toji Fushiguroadult, no age givenThe assassin

Those ages come from a few places: The Escapist for Gojo, Sportskeeda for Geto, Shoko and Kuroi, and Wikipedia, Season 2 for Riko. One visual detail worth catching: as a teenager Gojo wears black sunglasses instead of the adult blindfold, and Game Rant notes his Six Eyes were "far from perfect" back then (Game Rant).

Do I need to watch the Hidden Inventory arc before Season 3?

Yes. In release order it comes first, since it sits inside Season 2 and Season 3 follows Season 2 (CBR). I'd also argue it explains Geto, and Geto's face matters a great deal in Shibuya.

Skip it and you skip the only explanation of why Gojo's student Megumi is his student at all. That thread starts with Toji's last words in episode 4.

Is there a Hidden Inventory movie?

Yes: the Hidden Inventory / Premature Death arc was re-released as a compilation film that opened in Japan on May 30, 2025, and GKIDS released the Hidden Inventory film in the United States on July 16, 2025, subtitled and dubbed (Anime News Network). It is the same story as Season 2 episodes 1 to 5, so watching the episodes covers it.

The compilation was first announced in August 2024 (Anime News Network).

How do you build a bodyguard character of your own?

You build one by giving her a job that already went wrong once, in the backstory, and a greeting that opens on the night of the next one. The canon cast of this arc is mostly teenagers, so the recipe below is an original adult inspired by the arc's theme, a protection job that failed. Every field fits the YourCrush.AI character creator; copy it and change the details.

Name (15 of 40 characters): Ayane Kirishima

Behaviour mode: natural

Category: Anime

Traits (5, from the list of 32): Protective, Calm, Honest, Loyal, Sarcastic

Speaking style (4 words): dry, watchful, brief, plain

Description (286 of 2,400 characters): Ayane is 34, a former escort sorcerer who now trains bodyguards. She sits with her back to the wall, counts exits without meaning to, and answers questions about the job with the shortest true sentence she can find. She treats you as the new partner she has been assigned for one night.

Backstory (260 of 2,400 characters): Twelve years ago Ayane and her partner were assigned to keep one person alive for three days. On the third day they failed. She never talks about who it was. She quit field work, took a desk, and only agreed to this night's job because you were the one asking.

Greeting (197 of 500 characters): Coffee's on the left, the door's on the right, and if anyone knocks you don't answer it. We have until sunrise. Ask me whatever you want, but ask it now, because after midnight I stop being polite.

The backstory never names the person she lost, and that gap is the point: it gives you something to ask about all night.

How YourCrush.AI lets you sit the night watch with a bodyguard who has done this before

A night watch only works if the character remembers what happened at ten when it is three in the morning, and YourCrush.AI is built for that. YourCrush.AI lets you pin memories, so the exits she counted and the knock she told you to ignore stay in play hours into the story. YourCrush.AI supports story branches, so you can open the door in one branch and keep it shut in another. YourCrush.AI also writes a first draft of Ayane's fields from a name and an image if you would rather start there, and voice messages let her answer in her own voice. The Anime library has characters other members built. Joining is free, signed-in members chat without a message cap, and the site is for adults 18 and over.
