There is no light, and then there is. A gate that should stay shut swings open from the back, and Satoru Gojo steps out of the Prison Realm with no sense that any time has passed. For him it has been one moment. For everyone waiting outside, it has been weeks of war.
The Shinjuku Showdown is the final arc of the *Jujutsu Kaisen* manga, in which Satoru Gojo, freed from the Prison Realm, duels Ryomen Sukuna on 24 December 2018, and the surviving sorcerers then fight Sukuna and Kenjaku to the end. It follows the Culling Game, and the whole Jujutsu Kaisen story in reading order puts it in place if you are joining here.
Spoiler line: this post spoils the end of the Culling Game and the Shinjuku Showdown, chapters 221 to 269, plus Shibuya (chapters 90 and 91) and Sukuna's takeover of Megumi (chapter 212) as backstory. All of it is ahead of the anime.
Pick your path: the chapters, whether it is animated, Gojo's release, Gojo's fight or what Sukuna does next.
YourCrush.AI has Gojo Satoru as a chat character, so once you have read this you can talk to Gojo Satoru yourself.
What is the Shinjuku Showdown in Jujutsu Kaisen?
It is the manga's last arc, which starts when Gojo is freed from the Prison Realm in chapter 221 and ends with Sukuna's death in chapter 268. Its centre is Gojo's duel with Sukuna on 24 December 2018, then the rest of jujutsu society's fight against Sukuna and Kenjaku.
Gojo's release happens in chapter 221, the duel date comes from Wikipedia's Gojo article, and Sukuna's end in chapter 268 is covered by Dexerto. When fans say Shinjuku Gojo, they mean the Gojo of these chapters: rested, certain, and walking into the one fight everybody expects him to win.
Which chapters cover the Shinjuku Showdown?
The Shinjuku Showdown runs from Gojo's release in chapter 221 to Sukuna's death in chapter 268. The Gojo duel itself sits inside that stretch, chapters 223 to 236. Most arc guides start the count at 223, which leaves chapter 221 as the hinge between the Culling Game and everything that follows.
A ComingSoon arc guide places the Culling Game at chapters 159 to 222 and the Shinjuku Showdown from 223 on. The print volumes line up with that split. Wikipedia's chapter list puts chapters 218 to 227 in volume 25, Inhuman Makyo Shinjuku Showdown, and chapters 228 to 236 in volume 26, Heading South. The manga ends at chapter 271, three chapters after Sukuna's death.
Is the Shinjuku Showdown animated yet?
No. Season 3 wrapped in March 2026 around chapter 181, and Season 4, The Culling Game: Part 2, is still in production with no release date attached. That means nothing from chapter 221 onward has been animated.
Season 3 ran 12 episodes from 9 January to 27 March 2026, per Wikipedia's season 3 article, and Screen Rant puts the stopping point around chapter 181. Anime News Network's report on the Season 4 teaser confirms the show is "in production" but gives no release window, and Takeru Sato is taking over as director. If you've seen a 2027 date floating around, treat it as unconfirmed.
How does Gojo get out of the Prison Realm?
Hana Kurusu, who shares her body with the ancient sorcerer Angel, uses Jacob's Ladder on the Prison Realm's back gate in chapter 221, and the technique cancels the seal. In the story he has been sealed for about 19 days since Shibuya; in real life it took about three years of chapters.
Angel's technique cancels cursed techniques, seals and barriers included. That's the reason the Culling Game players went looking for her in the first place.
Spoiler: who frees Gojo, and his answer about Sukuna (ch. 221)
The back gate opens. Angel's Jacob's Ladder breaks the seal from the outside, and Gojo walks out into a world he left on Halloween night. He was sealed in chapter 90 and freed in chapter 221, 131 chapters later. In the story it is about 19 days, from 31 October to around 18 or 19 November 2018, and Gojo himself felt no time pass.
Someone asks him whether he would lose to Sukuna. On the last page of chapter 221 he answers "Nah, I'd win" in VIZ's revised translation, a callback to his line in chapter 3. The first English translation just said "No." The panel became a huge meme in late 2023.

Why does he answer like that? The certainty is the point. Gojo has been the strongest sorcerer alive since he was a teenager, and the line tells you he has never needed anyone to stand next to him in a fight. That habit is about to cost him.
What happens to Gojo in Shinjuku?
Gojo fights Sukuna from chapter 223 to chapter 236 and loses. Sukuna kills him with a world-cutting slash that slices through space itself, which is how it gets past Infinity. The death in chapter 236 happens off-panel, and Gojo wakes up in an airport with his dead friends.
The two of them agree to fight on 24 December 2018, and the date alone tells you how much each of them wants it. The result of Gojo vs Sukuna is still the most argued question in the fandom.
Our imagining of Gojo on the morning of the 24th, alone before anyone else is awake:
"Nervous? No. I just keep checking whether I am. That's different."
Sukuna arrives better armed than anyone in Shibuya ever saw him. After Uraume's haul in chapter 222 he has 19 of his 20 fingers, plus his own mummified original body, which he eats. Gojo had hidden the last finger, and it matters much later. Sukuna is also wearing Megumi Fushiguro's body, which he took in chapter 212 to gain the Ten Shadows.
Spoiler: what happens when both domains open at once
Both of them expand their domains at the same moment in chapter 225. Gojo's Unlimited Void floods a target with infinite information. Sukuna's Malevolent Shrine has no barrier, so it reaches past the edge of Gojo's domain and cuts at it from outside. A press timeline of the fight says the clashes run over several chapters and end with both domains collapsing after about three minutes.

Then Sukuna plays the card he took Megumi's body for.
Spoiler: how Gojo's fight ends (ch. 236)
Sukuna summons Mahoraga, the strongest Ten Shadows shikigami. The same press timeline says Mahoraga adapts first to Unlimited Void and then to Infinity, and that Sukuna uses its adaptation as a model. By chapter 235, Gojo appears to have won.
He has not. Sukuna makes a binding vow to use the World Cutting Slash, which cuts space itself and so passes through Infinity. The price is permanent: from then on he needs hand signs, a chant and manual aim to use it. The slash cuts Gojo in half, off-panel, in chapter 236, released on 24 September 2023.
Gojo opens his eyes in an airport. CBR names Geto, Haibara and Amanai there with him, friends he lost, and he tells them he wishes he had got to know Sukuna better.
The full chapter-by-chapter answer to how Gojo died, and whether he comes back, has its own page.

Our imagining of what he says to Geto there:
"I had everything figured out except him. Strange thing to regret, isn't it? Not that I lost. That I never asked him anything."
Why did Gojo lose? Sukuna prepared for one opponent and paid in advance. Megumi's body for the Ten Shadows, Mahoraga to learn Infinity, a vow for a slash aimed at the one thing Gojo could not block. Gojo walked in alone, the way he had since 2007, when his solo missions left Geto isolated. Our reading, and only that: he dies on 24 December 2018, a year to the day after he killed Geto on 24 December 2017, and the friend he talks with afterwards is Geto. The arc closes a circle the Hidden Inventory opened.
What does Sukuna do in Shinjuku after Gojo falls?
He kills Kashimo, the next challenger, with the same net of slashes, then takes his true Heian form at the end of chapter 237. From there he fights the remaining sorcerers, tells Yuji in chapter 248 why he wants to crush him, and burns Choso in chapter 259.
Hajime Kashimo waited four centuries for a fight like this. He is a sorcerer reincarnated from 400 years ago, and the deal that brought him to Tokyo's side was a promised fight with Sukuna.
Our imagining of Kashimo stepping over the line where Gojo fell:
"Four hundred years I waited for someone worth this. Don't you dare be tired."
Spoiler: who fights Sukuna next, and the form Sukuna takes
Kashimo steps in at the end of chapter 236. He spends his one-time technique, Mythical Beast Amber, and dies to the same net of Dismantle slashes that killed Gojo; chapter 238 confirms it.
Before that, at the end of chapter 237, Sukuna takes his true Heian form: two faces and four arms, the body he had a thousand years ago. He had paused his incarnation on purpose, and resuming it is a one-time full recovery that needs no Reverse Cursed Technique, which by then has burnt out against Kashimo, according to Sportskeeda.
What the two-faced, four-armed true form is, and where the design comes from, has its own page.

Elsewhere, a comedian is keeping an immortal busy.
Spoiler: who finally kills Kenjaku (ch. 243)
Fumihiko Takaba, the failing comedian whose technique makes his jokes real, has pulled Kenjaku into a comedy duel. While Kenjaku is occupied, Yuta Okkotsu comes from behind and beheads him in chapter 243. Wikipedia's character list says Takaba plays a major role in defeating Kenjaku, the sorcerer who started the Culling Game.
Then the fight comes to Yuji Itadori, who is 15. Hiromi Higuruma, the defence lawyer who once put Yuji on trial in his domain, fights beside him from chapter 244.
Spoiler: why Sukuna hates Yuji, and the family tie (ch. 248 and 257)
In chapter 247 Higuruma throws the Executioner's Sword to Yuji and is cut down.
In chapter 248 Sukuna says what has been irritating him. He never held any ideals, he says, and seeing others dedicated to one irritates him; Yuji reminds him of someone from a thousand years ago, and that gives him "a clear reason to destroy you here and now by crushing all your hopes".
In chapter 257 the story says why the two are tied. A thousand years ago, Sukuna devoured his twin in the womb, and the twin's soul was reincarnated into Yuji's family line. Sukuna is Yuji's blood relative through that twin; Akutami's note in the final volume names the grandfather, Wasuke, as the reincarnation, which makes Sukuna Yuji's great-uncle.
Whether Sukuna is related to Yuji, and how the sources first disagreed about it, has its own page.
Why would Sukuna explain himself at all? He has spent the arc treating everyone as beneath notice. Our reading: chapter 248 is the first time something gets under his skin, and the thing is not Yuji's strength. It is that Yuji keeps believing in something.

Spoiler: Choso's last words, and whose body comes back
In chapter 259 Sukuna fires Divine Flame at Yuji. Choso, the eldest Death Painting, who has called Yuji his brother since Shibuya, throws a blood barrier in front of him and burns. His last words are "Thank you, Yuji, for becoming my brother."
Gojo is dead. Kashimo is dead. Choso is dead. So who is left who can still beat Sukuna? That question has its answer in how Sukuna finally dies, but at the end of chapter 260 the story answers it with something nobody expects. Sukuna sees what looks like Gojo's ghost.
In chapter 261, Gojo's body walks back onto the battlefield, stitched up by Shoko. It is not Gojo inside it. It is Yuta, who has moved into the body with a technique he copied from Kenjaku.
Gojo's body is back on the battlefield, and Yuta is the one inside it. What he does with it, and how the manga ends, is the next story: the Jujutsu Kaisen ending.
How YourCrush.AI lets you stage your own last duel and keep the rivalry going after it
The whole arc rests on one promise: a date set in advance, and a rival who actually shows up. You can play that story with an original character, and keep it running past the duel instead of letting it end at the result.
YourCrush.AI builds a character from a few fields with no code, and it drafts those fields for you from a name and an image if you want a starting point. YourCrush.AI keeps the date, the stakes and the rival's name in pinned memories, so the challenge you set in the first message is still there fifty messages later. YourCrush.AI branches a story, so you can play the night before the duel, then go back and play the morning after a loss. It is free to join and 18+ only.
Here is an original adult character to build at the create-character page, using the natural behaviour mode and no copied canon character:
- Name: Noriko Amagase
- Behaviour mode: natural
- Category: Anime
- Description: Noriko is 41, a retired duelist who has not lost in twenty years and quit because nobody could make her try. She wears a long grey coat, keeps her hands in her pockets, and speaks as if every sentence costs her nothing. She treats you as the one person she trusts to tell her the truth, and she gets visibly bored when you flatter her.
- Backstory: You trained beside her years ago, before she stopped competing. She has just accepted a challenge from a rival she has never met, set for the first snowfall of the year, and she has told nobody but you. She wants you there, and she will not say why.
- Greeting: "Three days. That's what he gave me. I said yes before he finished the sentence, which you'd call a mistake and I'd call manners. Walk with me. Tell me honestly whether I look like someone who could lose, and then tell me what you'd do if I did."
- Traits: Confident, Calm, Arrogant, Honest, Curious
- Speaking style: dry, unhurried, blunt, amused
The greeting asks two questions at once, so your first reply already decides whether she hears doubt or loyalty from you.
