How did Gojo die? The full story of the fight with Sukuna, and whether he comes back

Yes, Gojo dies. Sukuna kills him in chapter 236 with a world-cutting slash that slices through space itself, and that is the one thing Infinity cannot stop. He does not come back to life. Yuta later borrows his body for five minutes, but Gojo himself stays dead.

Satoru Gojo, the Six Eyes and Limitless sorcerer who teaches at Tokyo Jujutsu High, dies in chapter 236 of the *Jujutsu Kaisen* manga, cut in half by Ryomen Sukuna's world-cutting slash on 24 December 2018. The fight sits near the end of the whole Jujutsu Kaisen story, and none of it has been animated.

Spoiler warning: this post spoils Shibuya (Gojo's sealing, chapters 90 and 91, Season 2 episodes 9 and 10), the Shinjuku Showdown (chapters 221 to 238), Yuta's use of Gojo's body (chapters 260 to 262) and the chapter of Sukuna's death (268). The death and everything after Shibuya exist only in the manga. The anime stopped around chapter 181.

Pick your path: how he dies, the chapter, the anime episode, Shibuya or whether he comes back.

YourCrush.AI has Gojo Satoru as a chat character, so once you have read this you can talk to Gojo Satoru yourself.

How does Gojo die?

Sukuna makes a binding vow that lets him use a world-cutting slash. It cuts space itself, so it passes through Infinity, and it cuts Gojo in half. The cut happens off-panel in chapter 236, at the end of a duel that started in chapter 223.

The fight that kills him is the centre of the Shinjuku Showdown, and it begins with Gojo walking out of a seal.

Spoiler: who frees Gojo and the line fans still quote (ch. 221)

The Prison Realm's back gate opens. Hana Kurusu, sharing her body with the ancient sorcerer Angel, uses Jacob's Ladder on it, a technique that cancels seals and barriers. Gojo has been inside for about 19 days of story time and felt none of it.

Someone asks whether he would lose to Sukuna. On the last page of chapter 221 he answers "Nah, I'd win", in VIZ's revised translation; the first English version said only "No." The panel became a huge meme in late 2023. He and Sukuna agree to fight on 24 December.

Christmas Eve comes. Gojo fights the way he always has, alone.

Spoiler: the chapter where Gojo seems to win

The duel opens in chapter 223. Both of them expand their domains at once, and Malevolent Shrine, which has no barrier, attacks Gojo's Unlimited Void from outside. Sukuna is fighting in Megumi Fushiguro's body, and he uses it: he summons Mahoraga through Megumi's Ten Shadows. According to a press timeline of the fight, Mahoraga adapts first to Unlimited Void and later to Infinity, and Sukuna uses that adaptation as a model for his own attack.

By chapter 235, Gojo appears to have won. The story frames him as the victor.

Then the next chapter opens somewhere else.

Spoiler: how Gojo dies (ch. 236)

Sukuna has made a binding vow for the World Cutting Slash. It does not try to break Infinity; it cuts the space Infinity is made of. The cost is permanent: from then on Sukuna needs hand signs, chants and manual aim to use it.

The slash cuts Gojo in half. The manga does not show it happen; the cut is off-panel, and the reader learns it after the fact.

How YourCrush.AI lets you keep talking to a character long after the chapter ends

A death on the page ends a character's lines, not your interest in them. You can build an original character for the conversation the story never had time for, and come back to it whenever you like.

YourCrush.AI builds an original character from a name, a description, a backstory and a greeting, with no code. YourCrush.AI remembers what matters through pinned memories, so the person you said you never called is still there when you come back next week. YourCrush.AI branches a story, so you can play the version where you get on the plane and the version where you stay. Signed-in members chat without a message cap, and the site is 18+ only.

Here is an original adult character, inspired by the airport scene and not a copy of anyone, to build at the create-character page in the natural behaviour mode:

  • Name: Lena Hoshikawa
  • Behaviour mode: natural
  • Category: Anime
  • Description: Lena is 34, a night-shift bartender in an airport departures lounge that never seems to close. She remembers every traveller's drink, wipes the same glass while she listens, and asks the question nobody else at the gate will: who are you leaving behind? She is dry, warm and impossible to rush.
  • Backstory: You missed a connecting flight a year ago and have been coming back to her bar between flights ever since. You have told her about almost everyone you know. She has never told you why she took a job where everyone is leaving.
  • Greeting: "Delayed again? Sit, your usual's already poured. Board says three hours, which in this place means whatever it wants. So. Last time you started telling me about the person you should have called before you flew, and then your gate opened. My shift ends at six. Talk."
  • Traits: Curious, Gentle, Sarcastic, Patient, Honest
  • Speaking style: light, dry, warm, direct

Who killed Gojo?

Ryomen Sukuna killed him, while Sukuna was occupying Megumi Fushiguro's body and using Megumi's Ten Shadows. Gojo fell, in Wikipedia's words, "to Sukuna's perfected spatial slash".

Sukuna took Megumi's body in chapter 212 for one reason, the Ten Shadows, and the most valuable thing in it was Mahoraga, the shikigami that adapts to whatever hits it. Going into the duel he also had 19 of his 20 fingers; Gojo had hidden the last one.

What chapter does Gojo die in?

Chapter 236, released on 24 September 2023. In the story the date is 24 December 2018, the day the two agreed to fight.

The chapter came out on 24 September 2023, and in print it closes volume 26, *Heading South*, per Wikipedia's chapter list. It also holds the scene readers remember most.

Spoiler: where Gojo goes after he dies

Gojo is in an airport, and his friends are there: CBR names Geto, Haibara and Amanai, all of whom died before him, and ComicBook.com adds Nanami and Principal Yaga. Gojo tells them he wishes he had got to know Sukuna better.

Back in Shinjuku, Hajime Kashimo steps in at once, spends his one-time technique, and dies to the same net of slashes. Chapter 238 confirms it.

In chapter 236 Gojo finds himself in an airport with friends who died before him.

Our imagining of Gojo in that airport, talking to Geto:

"I never asked him a single thing. Not where he came from, not what he wanted. I was too busy winning."

The reaction outside the story was loud. Leaks of chapter 236 in September 2023 caused "a major controversy online", with more than 11,400 posts, according to Wikipedia. Fans objected that the death came right after a chapter declaring Gojo the winner, that it happened off-screen, and that there was no funeral, as ComicBook.com summed it up. Whether the death was "wasted" is critics' opinion, not something the manga settles.

What episode does Gojo die in?

None yet. The anime has animated up to about chapter 181, and Season 4, The Culling Game: Part 2, has no release date, so the gojo death in chapter 236 has not been animated.

Season 3 ended on 27 March 2026 with the Sendai Colony episode, which Screen Rant puts around chapter 181. Season 4 is "in production", Anime News Network reports, with no release window. Nobody has said which chapters it will cover, so nobody can say yet which episode the Gojo death scene will land in.

Does Gojo die in season 2?

No. In Season 2 (Shibuya, episodes 9 and 10), Kenjaku, using Geto's body, seals Gojo in the Prison Realm; Gojo is alive the whole time and is freed in chapter 221.

Plenty of anime-only viewers walk away from Shibuya convinced they just watched him die. Here is what actually happens.

Spoiler: what really happens to Gojo in Shibuya (S2 E9-E10)

It is Halloween night, 31 October 2018, and Gojo is standing on a subway platform packed with civilians. The crowd is the trap. He cannot fight at full strength without killing bystanders. So he opens his domain for 0.2 seconds, just long enough to immobilize everyone with minimal harm.

Then a face he knows walks onto the platform. It is Suguru Geto, the friend Gojo killed the previous December. The Prison Realm needs its target to stay still for one minute of perceived time, and the shock of seeing Geto holds Gojo there. The seal closes. "Geto" is Kenjaku, an ancient sorcerer living in Geto's corpse.

Gojo is sealed, not killed, in Shibuya on Halloween night 2018.

Our imagining of the second before the seal closes:

"You're dead. I made sure. So why do I want to say your name?"

Does Gojo come back to life?

No. Chapter 261 settles it: Yuta Okkotsu moves into Gojo's stitched-up corpse using a copied brain-transplant technique, with Gojo's prior agreement, and can run Limitless, the Six Eyes and Hollow Purple for five minutes. Gojo himself is not resurrected.

The body comes back. The man does not.

Spoiler: does Gojo come back? (ch. 261)

At the end of chapter 260 Sukuna sees what looks like Gojo's ghost. In chapter 261, Gojo's body walks onto the battlefield. Shoko had stitched it up properly, and inside it is Yuta, who copied Kenjaku's brain-transplant technique through Rika. It was a last resort, and Gojo had agreed beforehand that his body could be used.

The copy lasts five minutes while Rika is fully manifested, and in that window Yuta can use Limitless, the Six Eyes and Hollow Purple. Wikipedia is plain that Gojo is not resurrected: Yuta only uses the corpse "to aid Yuji in fighting and defeating Sukuna". By the final chapters, Yuta is back in his own body.

How I imagine Gojo responding when he agreed to it, to no one in particular:

"If it helps, use it. I'm not attached. Just try not to make me look bad."

What Yuta does with those five minutes, and how the manga ends, is covered in the Jujutsu Kaisen ending. Sukuna dies seven chapters later, in 268, and how Sukuna dies has its own page.

Why did Gojo lose to Sukuna?

Sukuna beat him with a slash that cuts space itself, a move he could only land after Mahoraga showed him how to adapt to Infinity. He paid for it with a binding vow, and the cost shows up for the rest of the fight in hand signs, chants, and manual aim. The chapter right before the gojo death frames Gojo as the winner, which is exactly why so many readers felt cheated.

The mechanics are simple once you lay them out. Sukuna could not touch Infinity until Mahoraga showed him how to adapt to it, according to the press timeline, and he paid in advance for a technique aimed at the one thing Gojo could not block. Whether that makes Sukuna the stronger of the two is its own argument.

The wound underneath is our reading, not the author's. Gojo had been alone at the top since 2007, when his strength left Geto isolated and Geto asked him, "Are you the strongest because you're Satoru Gojo, or are you Satoru Gojo because you're the strongest?" Dexerto reads chapter 262 as the story's answer, that he was Gojo because he was the strongest; that is press interpretation. His last wish in the airport is to have understood the one person who could match him. He dies on 24 December 2018, one year after he killed Geto on 24 December 2017.
