Season 3 of The Apothecary Diaries premiered on Friday 2 October 2026 at 11:00 p.m. Japan time on Nippon TV, and Crunchyroll streams it outside Asia from 8:00 a.m. Pacific the same day. It picks up the story at light novel volume 5, and it is split in two: a first half now, a break over winter, then a second half in April 2027.
Pick your path: the schedule and release times, what the season adapts, where to read on, or the Maomao and Jinshi question, spoilers hidden.
The Apothecary Diaries is a mystery series by Natsu Hyuuga about Maomao, an apothecary raised in a red-light district who is kidnapped and sold into the imperial rear palace, where she solves poisonings and deaths for a palace official named Jinshi. It began as a web novel in 2011 and became a light novel series in 2014, per the series entry on Wikipedia; the anime started in October 2023.
Between episodes, YourCrush.AI lets you build an original palace investigator and work a case with them, using the recipe near the end of this guide.
When does season 3 come out?
Season 3 came out on 2 October 2026 and airs weekly on Fridays. Anime News Network reported on 25 September 2026 that the first cour broadcasts at 11:00 p.m. on Nippon TV and 29 affiliated channels, with the second cour following in April 2027. The same report names the opening song, "Kumo o Nukekazashimo e Watashidake" by Yorushika, and the ending, "AIYOU" by Eve, and adds Reina Ueda to the cast as Bai Niangniang, described as a pale and mysterious nymph.
Crunchyroll has the stream in the United States and most other territories. ComicBook reported on 30 September 2026 that episode 1 goes up on Crunchyroll at 8:00 a.m. PT on 2 October, an hour after the Japanese broadcast begins. In select Asian regions the season streams on Netflix instead, as the series' episode history on Wikipedia) records.

The US and UK times are for October; when the clocks change (25 October in the UK, 1 November in the US) they move one hour earlier against Japan's fixed time.
The episode count is not confirmed by Nippon TV or Crunchyroll as of 2 October 2026. Encyclopedia listings show 24 episodes split twelve and twelve, which matches the first two seasons, but treat that as expected rather than announced. A Japanese broadcast week can also be skipped for sports or a special, so check Crunchyroll's simulcast calendar before assuming a date in November or December.
Recap: where season 2 left the story (spoilers for seasons 1 and 2)
Season 2 closed the light novel's fourth volume. The Shi clan's rebellion failed, and the court that survives it is a different court. Consort Gyokuyou has given birth to a son, which is what makes her empress at the start of volume 5, according to the Square Enix product page for volume 5. Maomao is no longer living inside the rear palace.
There is a film coming too. Anime News Network's same report says The Apothecary Diaries: The Deceased Empress' Treasure opens in Japanese cinemas on 11 December 2026, with a new story written by Hyuuga rather than adapted from an existing volume, so it is optional for keeping up with the series.
How YourCrush.AI lets you work a palace case with a character you built
If the part you love is following a sharp mind through a poisoning, YourCrush.AI lets you build an original court investigator and work cases with them, no code needed. YourCrush.AI hosts no Apothecary Diaries characters and will not host Maomao, so the recipe below is an original adult character for a mystery played as a partnership, not a romance.
Paste these into the character creator, and keep the behaviour mode on natural.
Copyable recipe: Wen Liyan, keeper of the seal archive
Name: Wen Liyan, Keeper of the Seal Archive
Category: Anime. Behaviour mode: natural.
Traits: Intelligent, Curious, Sarcastic, Patient, Mysterious
Speaking style: dry, precise, unhurried, wry
Description: Wen Liyan is 34, the keeper of the imperial seal archive, a narrow building of cedar shelves where every edict, contract and death certificate of the court is copied and filed. She is tall, ink-stained at the cuffs, and keeps her hair pinned with a bamboo stylus. She trusts paper over people, because paper cannot change its story. She treats you as a junior clerk with potential and no sense, answers questions with questions, and will not tell you who did it until you have argued your way there.
Backstory: You were assigned to the archive three weeks ago after copying a forged tax record without noticing. Liyan noticed. Since then she has used you as her legs: you go where an archivist cannot be seen, and she reads what you bring back. Two of the court's deaths this year were filed as fevers. Liyan has the certificates side by side and the handwriting does not match the physician who signed them.
Greeting: Liyan slides two certificates across the desk without looking up. "Same physician, same week, same fever. Look at the brush strokes on the character for death and tell me what you see. Then tell me why the kitchen steward signed for extra salt the night before both of them died."
YourCrush.AI generates a description, backstory, greeting and traits from just a name and an image if you would rather start there, and every field in the recipe fits the creator's limits (2,400 characters for description and backstory, 500 for the greeting). YourCrush.AI keeps pinned memories, so a clue you pin in episode one of your case is still there when you accuse someone. YourCrush.AI saves story branches, which lets you try a wrong accusation without losing the right path.
The Free plan is $0 and covers 3 characters created, 10 pinned memories and 1 story branch, enough for one case. Pro is $9.99 a month for 50 characters, 50 pinned memories and 5 branches; Premium at $19.99 makes characters, branches and memories unlimited. The limit to know before you start: one story branch on Free means one alternative accusation per case, not a tree of them. YourCrush.AI is 18+ only. For finished characters to try first, browse anime characters on Explore, or read the original character ideas guide before you write your own.
What does season 3 adapt from the light novel?
Season 3 adapts light novel volume 5 and continues from there. The first two seasons, 48 episodes in total, covered volumes 1 to 4 between them, according to Game Rant's reading guide, which also lists volume 5 as running from a chapter called "Locusts" to one called "The Banquet."
| Season | Aired | Episodes | Light novel volumes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Season 1 | 22 Oct 2023 to 24 Mar 2024 | 24 | 1 to 4, shared with season 2 |
| Season 2 | 10 Jan to 4 Jul 2025 | 24 | 1 to 4, shared with season 1 |
| Season 3, part 1 | From 2 Oct 2026 | Not confirmed | From 5 |
| Season 3, part 2 | April 2027 | Not confirmed | Not confirmed |
Air dates and episode counts for seasons 1 and 2 are from the Wikipedia entry for the TV series). The guide gives the combined coverage rather than a per-season split, and nobody official has said how far part 2 will get.
Volume 5 takes the story out of the rear palace. The publisher's blurb names an insect plague and an expedition west, so expect fewer locked-room cases and more politics between provinces.
Spoiler for volume 5: what the season's first arc is about
Per the Square Enix blurb, Gyokuyou's son makes her empress and rewrites court politics, the peace after the Shi clan's fall does not hold, a plague of insects threatens, and Jinshi orders an expedition to Gyokuyou's homeland. Maomao goes west with it, and something is waiting in the western city that she has to work out before it catches her.
Spoiler for volume 6: where the western trip leads
The volume 6 blurb says events in the western capital shake the political order and Maomao's relationships, that she learns more about her own family background on the way home, and that a scandal catches Consort Lishu. If part 2 in April 2027 reaches this book, that is the material.
Where should you read after the anime?
Read the light novels, starting at volume 5. The anime has passed both manga adaptations, so the novels are the only way to stay ahead of the broadcast; Game Rant's guide notes that the Square Enix manga had only reached the equivalent of season 2's episodes 21 and 22 when the season ended.

The English apothecary diaries light novel comes in two forms. J-Novel Club sells all 16 volumes digitally, rated 15+, and its latest, volume 16, turns on a smallpox outbreak. Square Enix publishes the series in print: volume 5 came out on 6 May 2025 at $18.99 for 336 pages, and volume 6 on 5 August 2025.
Which edition to buy, in one line each
Read digitally on J-Novel Club if you want to reach volume 16 without waiting for print. Buy the Square Enix paperbacks if you collect, starting at volume 5. Read either manga from chapter 1 if you want the first two seasons again with different art, because neither has reached season 3's material.
Starting a novel series in the middle sounds odd, and with most adaptations it is a bad idea. Here it works, because seasons 1 and 2 followed volumes 1 to 4 closely enough that a viewer who has watched both loses almost nothing by opening volume 5 cold.
Do Maomao and Jinshi end up together?
Nobody knows yet, because the story has not ended. The Japanese light novels are still being published and J-Novel Club's English list runs to volume 16, so any answer to "together or not" is a forecast, not a spoiler.
What the books do establish is a slow burn that moves in one direction. Jinshi's interest is open almost from the start; Maomao's side moves much more slowly. Age matters here. Maomao is 17 when the story opens, per EpicStream's character guide, and Jinshi is 18 while passing as a 23-year-old eunuch. This article treats her as a detective and gives no character recipe for her or for Jinshi.
Spoiler for seasons 1 and 2: who Jinshi really is
Jinshi is not a eunuch. His real name is Ka Zuigetsu, and he is presented at court as the Emperor's younger brother, using suppressants to keep up the disguise, per Wikipedia's character entry). Volume 5's blurb says he can no longer keep up the eunuch pretence in the rear palace, which is part of why season 3 feels different.
Spoiler for the light novels: the secret about his birth
The same entry records a later reveal: Jinshi is the Emperor's son, swapped in infancy with the Emperor's brother who died. That puts him next in line to the throne, which he keeps refusing.
Spoiler-light: is it a romance by season 3
The novels describe Maomao slowly beginning to return Jinshi's feelings while he says plainly that he is pursuing her, per the Maomao character entry). Volume 6's blurb says the western trip shakes "Maomao's relationships." The mystery plots stay the main event.
What anime is like The Apothecary Diaries?
Raven of the Inner Palace is the closest match: another rear-palace mystery whose heroine takes requests from the court. After that it depends on which part of the show you like, so the table sorts them by what they share.
| Show | Shares | Differs |
|---|---|---|
| Raven of the Inner Palace | A consort in the rear palace solving requests | Supernatural cases, not poisons |
| Snow White with the Red Hair | A herbalist heroine who earns a place at court | Gentler, little mystery |
| My Happy Marriage | Slow-burn romance between adults, court-family politics | Melodrama over deduction |
| Spice and Wolf | Two adults solving problems by being cleverer than everyone | Trade and money, not medicine |
| The Twelve Kingdoms | Imperial politics taken seriously | Fantasy war, far darker |
Watch if, skip if: one verdict per show
Raven of the Inner Palace: watch if you want the rear-palace setting; skip if you need cases with real-world explanations. Snow White with the Red Hair: watch if Maomao's work as an apothecary is your favourite part; skip if you came for the murders. My Happy Marriage: watch if the court-family politics hooked you; skip if slow episodes bother you. Spice and Wolf: watch for two people out-thinking a room; skip if you dislike long economics talk. The Twelve Kingdoms: watch for the politics; skip if you want anything light.
