High School DxD is Ichiei Ishibumi's supernatural comedy set in a world where Devils, Angels and Fallen Angels wage a hidden war. After being killed and revived as a Devil, Issei Hyōdō joins the household of the Devil heiress Rias Gremory and learns to use the dragon power sealed in his Sacred Gear.

The world
The Underworld is ruled by Devil nobility, whose heirs build households using Evil Pieces modeled on chess, turning others into Devils as their servants. Angels serve Heaven, and Fallen Angels lead the Grigori. Some humans are born with Sacred Gears, artifacts that can hold dragons, holy swords or other powers. Rating Games between Devil households decide rank and honor. The human side of the story takes place at Kuoh Academy, a school secretly run by Devils.
